We are looking for experienced Front-End, Back-End, Full stack and DevOps Software Engineers to come and join our expanding community of Software Engineers here at The Office for National Statistics.

Job description

As a Software Engineer you will be responsible for writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach, and working to open-source principles to create code that is easy to re-use. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the full software development lifecycle, carrying out the design, running, testing and continuous improvement of software to meet user needs.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Designing software products to serve a variety of user needs and enhancing existing software products to meet evolving user needs.
• Ensuring a quality software product is delivered and maintained, alongside assessing and peer reviewing the work of others.
• Triage issues and build stories for more involved issues, document processes and support more junior colleagues.
• Being a practitioner in the use of technologies and tools, evaluating and adopting those appropriate for the environment.
• Supporting an environment where continuous or “on demand” delivery can be enabled if needed by the business, using effective delivery and deployment techniques.
• Maintaining and supporting services, identifying, locating and competently fixing faults, and taking proactive actions to avoid service.
• Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques; identifying and sharing good practices and collaborating to improve the capability of the team.

Essential Criteria

We work across multiple business areas, software tools and systems and using a range of programming languages, Including: Python, R, Oracle, Java, C#, React, Go, Flask, Cucumber, Jinja, Jquery, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

We expect that you will have experience of using some of these technologies.

• Design systems characterised by requirements, impact and business or technical complexity.
• Able to investigate issues and develop fixes with experience in mentoring/coaching others.
• Able to design, implement and execute a wide range of functional and non-functional testing techniques in a commercial environment.
• We work across multiple business areas, software tools and systems and use a range of programming languages. We expect that you will have experience of using some of these technologies and be keen to learn others.
