Web/Mobile Software Engineer

Location: Anywhere in Northern Ireland (remote/flexible office working)
Reporting to: CTO

Role Summary

At Obbi, we are creating a new way of managing Health & Safety compliance in workplaces and sports clubs. The existing landscape is filled with products and consultants that only solve narrow parts of the problem – but we believe that integrating Health & Safety compliance across training, induction, and day-to-day tasks etc. leads to better safety outcomes for organisations of all shapes and sizes.

And our customers agree! We’ve recently branched out our core product from Construction and Manufacturing into the Golf sector, and we’ll be expanding into wider markets over the coming years. We believe our product’s approach is more aligned to how human beings actually think about their obligations towards safety, both of themselves and of others.

Our mission is to make the workplace and sport safer for all, which is the “North Star” for all our business and product decisions. We were recently awarded a large grant to develop a world-class User Experience and Reporting capability in our product, which is why we are growing our team today.

We would love to work with someone who is curious about the challenges our customers face and about the best technology to solve them. We are looking for someone who takes joy in working closely with others, and someone who understands the needs of the people we work with (be that the customers, the wider business, or our own team).

We have also taken the decision that Obbi will be a distributed-first product company. Our policy is “WFA” – Work From Anywhere. We meet up in person when we need to, but we recognise that there’s no going back to 9-5 in an open-plan office environment. We firmly believe that a healthy, trusting, and effective distributed team is both possible and desirable in the era of modern product development.

Responsibilities (what you’ll be doing day-to-day)

· Work in a focused team of product engineers to create a world-class Health & Safety product (focusing on the more user-facing aspects of the system, e.g. the web front-end and the mobile app)

· Understand customer needs and how they translate to new and existing product capabilities

· Write high quality, testable, maintainable code (either by yourself or in pairs/mobs)

· Ensure quality is an integral part of the development process, not an afterthought

· Tackle technical debt through refactoring, architectural improvement etc.

· Effectively share knowledge amongst a distributed team

Essential Criteria (our core needs for someone in this role)

· 3+ years’ experience developing web applications (UX focused / React / Mobile).

· Proven track record of working collaboratively within a product team to create a real-world impact

· Ability to work across different tech stacks, platforms, API’s etc. as required

· Demonstrable understanding of quality software design and programming principles

· CI/CD experience, automated unit and integration testing

· Strong sense of design and user interaction principles for digital products

Desirable Criteria (don’t fret if you don’t have these – we’re confident you can learn them on the job)

· DevOps experience in a SaaS product (“You build it, you run it.”) on AWS or Azure

· Mobile development on Android/iOS (our app is built in React Native, so if you’re a React web dev, you can definitely do this)
