Title: Waste Education Project Officer, Temporary (upto June, 2022) – Part-time Role

Salary Range: $81496.69 to $94712.66 per annum on pro rata basis + super (subject to skills and experiences)

Stretching from Palm Beach to Manly, the Northern Beaches boasts more than half of all the beaches in Sydney and a population of more than 270,000. Northern Beaches Council was created in 2016 through the three councils of Manly, Pittwater and Warringah coming together to deliver the highest quality services to the community. Exciting new infrastructure projects and community programs have quickly demonstrated the positive impact the new council is having.

Role Purpose
This position is funded by the NSW Government’s Waste less, recycle more program, and will assist Northern Beaches Council in developing its own long term waste and circular economy strategy by working with the waste education team to:

  • Support local business, supermarkets and the community through the Swap for Good program, to minimise their usage of Single Use Plastics and transition towards reusable systems, in support of Council Policies and targets set by the NSW Plastics Plan, to help pave the way for a circular economy This will include working with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and/or Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE), to help provide advice and solutions to local businesses and the community to support phase outs in the NSW Plastics Action Plan. To help achieve the program goals and ensure continuity of the work of the Swap for Good program, the officer will provide training to selected community groups with capacity for business and community outreach.
  • Project manage a trial of separate collections of timber, metals, textiles and/or other recyclables through Council’s bulky goods waste collection service.
  • Project manage a ‘whole of supply chain’ trial to connect collection, processing and end markets for problem wastes generated in Northern Beaches. This may include trials for soft plastics, textiles and/or other problem wastes, and exploration of whether the recovered materials can be reused by Council in its operations/infrastructure or bin/composting.
