About the Department
The Poole College of Management offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, business administration, and economics. The Office of Undergraduate Programs within Poole College promotes and supports the holistic development of Poole College students as leaders in our diverse, global community. In partnership with our faculty, staff and external constituents, we provide the resources necessary to empower students to make well-informed decisions in support of their academic, professional and personal development. Our resources are provided in an environment that fosters recognition of and respect for individual diversity and cultural competence while promoting a community of inclusion and equity.
The Office of Undergraduate Programs supports our undergraduate student resource units in the Poole College of Management including academic advising, diversity and inclusion, global programming and career and internship development. Our academic advisors act as a catalyst for students to achieve their best outcomes, providing developmentally focused advising that incorporates both curricular and co-curricular guidance. Our academic advisors are instrumental in the whole student experience from the academic requirements necessary to progress to graduation to the full breadth and depth of co-curricular offerings within our College that allow students to be as competitive as possible upon graduation.
Essential Job Duties
The Director of Academic Advising reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs and is responsible for the strategic visioning and execution of advising-related initiatives for our 3500+ Poole College of Management students.
The role carries direct responsibility for assessing, evaluating and troubleshooting retention, persistence, progress to degree and student success outcomes. The Director of Academic Advising directly supervises the Associate Director of Academic Advising and the Associate Director of Advising Programs and indirectly supervises two senior academic advisors and 4 primary academic advisors.
This role has direct oversight of the student experience within the advising unit and related programs. The Director has direct responsibility for the management of high risk and special populations; organization and management of the registration advising experience; coordination of the first year success course M100 and management of the assessment of academic advising and related programs. The Director will also manage a small caseload and will provide students with advice and guidance on curriculum, course scheduling, college and university policies, and curricular and co-curricular opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities:
Strategic visioning of academic advising within Poole College of Management.
Coordination and oversight of programs to enhance student success including, but not
limited to orientation, registration and advising processes and activities, student
information sessions, faculty workshops, etc.
Assessment of academic advising, advising programs and outcomes.
Through supervision of Associate Director of Academic Advising and Associate Director of
Advising Programs:
Provide management and oversight over creation and delivery of specialized
outreach, information, and programs to students by relevant population.
Provide management and oversight of senior and primary advising staff.
Coordinate first year M100 Personal and Professional Development course.
Coordinate and collaborate with other NC State centers and initiatives as needed to
support Poole College students (including counseling center, DASA, university advising
committees, etc.).
Manage M100 first-year success course working group.
Collaborate closely with Director of Curriculum and Academic Programs to facilitate and support academic policies and procedures.
Manage maintenance of academic advising portion of OUP website (collaborating with
other units as needed to facilitate a holistic presentation of information).
Advise a large student load of undergraduate students in the Poole College of Management regarding academic requirements (matriculation and graduation), course selection and registration, and other issues related to academic and student success (i.e., international study, student organizations, internships),
Teach multiple units of M100 (Personal and Professional Development) course,
Develop and deliver programs to diverse student populations in order to promote student engagement and success,
Participate in college and university student recruitment, advising and student development programs and events, including some evening and weekend events,
Manage/advise student organization(s) within the college.
Other Responsibilities
Represent Poole College of Management on relevant university committees.
Represent Poole College of Management at relevant university events.
Active participation in Poole College of Management events including evenings and
weekends as needed to effectively execute the responsibilities of the position.
Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
At least five years in academic advising at the college level, preferably in a business program; evidence of successful attainment of measurable outcomes in student advising position; strong communication skills: oral, written and presentation; excellent interpersonal and counseling skills; ability to effectively juggle large student loads and multiple responsibilities.
Experience with NC State Student Information System and advising systems including GPS, NC State degree audits and NC State degree planner (or similar systems).
Familiarity with Poole College of Management curriculum, degree requirements and paths to degree completion.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with successfully managing a large caseload of students.
Experience teaching an advising/orientation related course to undergraduate.
Evidence of effective presentations delivered in a large-group environment.
