About the Department
The Career Development Center provides programs and services that facilitate career development and job placement among NC State University students.
Essential Job Duties
The Career Counselor will provide career development services tailored to meet the needs undergraduate and graduate of students of NC State University, with a focus on the College of Sciences and a resource to the daily operations of the Career Development Center. As a part of the Student Services Team, of the Career Development Center, work toward equipping NC State University students overall to successfully launch into their career searches and careers.
Provide customized presentations to classes, advisors, student organizations, residence halls, graduate students, and other campus groups as needed.
Primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Student Services, the position will provide individual and group career coaching to College of Sciences (COS) students in the areas of career and professional development, resume construction, interview preparation, job/internship search strategies, and the ePack recruiting database system.
Prepare and deliver customized Career Development Center information to various stakeholders.
Represent the Career Development Center at university orientation sessions and other campus-wide events.
Build relationships with COS faculty members and present career topics to classes and clubs.
Supervise graduate student workers to help provide services to COS via career counseling appointments, drop-ins, and workshop presentations.
Share current knowledge of scientific career paths and the hiring needs of interns and entry-level professionals.
Design new networking opportunities to connect students to alumni.
Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Career Development Center and complete additional projects as assigned.
Other Responsibilities
Provide customized presentations to classes, advisors, student organizations, residence halls, graduate students, and other campus groups as needed.
Provide career development services to students on a walk-in basis as required to maintain CDC walk-in service hours.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or related area, 1 to 2 years experience providing career counseling in a college/university setting.
Other Required Qualifications
Possess demonstrated effectiveness in working with students, faculty, administrators, and employers
Ability to work independently, display a professional demeanor, and demonstrate resourcefulness and problem solving skills.
Good organizational skills, as well as strong written and oral communication skills: public speaking, with small and large groups
Demonstrate excellent skills in establishing and nurturing collegial relationships and working as a part of a team
Proven ability to build positive relationships across campus
Knowledge of career counseling, scientific career paths, and the labor market.
Creative, high energy, adaptable team player enthusiastic about the challenge of moving students toward reaching their future goals.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with career counseling.
Project management and event planning skills as well as the ability to use assessment data to continually improve and develop programs.
Prior experience with the use of innovative web based technology, creative desk top publishing and marketing skills.
Ability to think strategically and independently within a “big picture” context and prioritize multiple projects as necessary.
Demonstrated leadership potential.
Strong student-centered focus.
Comfortable with technology and working in a constantly changing environment.
Knowledge of social media and the best techniques to communicate to current generation of students.
