About Nimax Theatres
Owned by Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer, Nimax Theatres is an entrepreneurial and innovative organisation, which owns and operates six theatres in the heart of London’s West End – the Apollo, Duchess, Garrick, Lyric, Palace and Vaudeville.
Our theatres currently have a combined nightly capacity of 5,000 seats and, in addition to hosting some of the UK’s most critically acclaimed and successful plays and musicals, present a busy and varied programme of comedy, concerts and children’s theatre.
Nica Burns will also be the owner/operator of a new state of the art theatre under construction at Soho Place, next to Soho Square. This new theatre will be a fantastic addition to the Soho district and to London as a whole and will have a close operational relationship with Nimax Theatres.

About this role
Nimax is a successful and growing theatre business that needs a dedicated HR professional to work both on their own initiative, and with others in the Company as part of a team. The role will work closely with the General Counsel and other members of management, and will have access to external employment law advice if necessary.
The main purpose of this role is to provide wide ranging HR support and leadership across the company which currently has approximately 380 employees across its 6 theatres and 2 head office buildings. The HR Manager will provide consistency in process across the business including, but not limited to, recruitment, employee relations, process auditing, legal compliance, writing, updating and reviewing policies and procedures and ensuring they are consistently applied. The HR Manager will be pro-active in resolving challenging situations whilst driving best practice and ensuring compliance with all company procedures, policies and employment legislation. The successful candidate will have excellent people management skills, good emotional intelligence, an ability to drive change, a hands on approach, an eye for detail and an ability to think ahead- all of which will be used to enhance best practice, overcome challenges and drive continuous improvement.
Key duties and responsibilities
Managing and advising on best practice recruitment processes across the group
Continuing to develop and support diversity and equal opportunity policies and practices and dignity at work initiatives and providing awareness training in these areas
Overseeing and ensuring consistency with the induction of new staff into the business and ensuring all roles have appropriate job descriptions
Writing, updating and reviewing HR policies and procedures and ensuring managers are up to date with any legislative or policy changes and best practice in relation to these
Assisting with training and roll out of HR policies and procedures and providing ongoing support and advice in relation to these
Preparing permanent and temporary employment contracts
Supporting performance management; creating and/or enhancing processes and guiding line managers on performance reviews and escalation processes
Coaching and mentoring managers and department heads on performance management and processes
Providing support and process advice on grievances, disciplinaries and any other employee related matters
Supporting career management and succession planning initiatives in collaboration with Directors
Supporting managers with recruitment by following agreed approval processes, assisting with interviews, reviewing contracts, ensuring all pre-employment checks are completed and references obtained
Review existing HR practices constantly according to changing employment legislation and best practice and advising Directors and line managers on HR related legislative changes
Actively playing a role alongside management in Union relations, liaison and negotiations with the Broadcasting, Entertainment and Cinema Trade Union (BECTU)
Providing proactive and reactive advice on all aspects of HR to line managers
Providing employee relations support and advice in relevant areas, overseeing process
Implementing, supporting and monitoring the appraisal process
Advising on processes and dealing with issues arising from sickness absence
Co-ordinating responses to staff queries on HR related matters including pensions, holiday entitlement, sick leave and other leave entitlements
Working with the pensions committee to ensure good governance in relation to the Company’s pension scheme and related obligations
Overseeing all HR administration including employee files
General
To be responsible for identifying and undertaking training and development as required to meet business needs
To always act in the best interests of Nimax Theatres and in line with all company policies
To undertake any other duty commensurate with the level of the post as may be required by the Executive Director
Person specification
Essential
Several years proven experience working as a Senior HR Advisor or as a standalone HR Generalist in a medium sized business
Current, working knowledge of UK employment law including GDPR
Previous experience coaching managers in all settings – one-to-one, teams and large groups including coaching workshops
Ability to build relationships at all levels including senior management level
Ability to identify needs, implement and effectively roll out new initiatives across the Company
IT competence; experience of using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and HR-specific management software
Experience of managing and leading teams, with strong personnel management skills and emotional intelligence
Excellent time management and organisation skills and experience of working under pressure and to deadlines
Desirable
Experience of working in Theatre, media or related arts organisation
Experience of employment contracts and relationships within a Union collective agreement
CIPD qualified
Conditions
Hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm
Place of work: Based initially at 11 Maiden Lane but the company reserves the right to assign the post holder to work at any London theatre operated by Nimax Theatres on a temporary or permanent basis.
