About NGP and NGPAF:

New Georgia Project (NGP) is a non-partisan, 501c3 nonprofit organization formed to register the unregistered people of color in the state of Georgia. Our work is based in registering and advocating for Georgians of color (Black, Latinos, Asian-Americans) while engaging them in the democratic process and participating in collective actions around common issue areas. Those issue areas include voting rights, quality and affordable health care, economic justice, civil rights and more. 

New Georgia Project Action Fund (NGPAF) is NGP’s non-partisan, 501c4 affiliate organization. It was formed to increase the civic participation of underrepresented and underserved communities of color. NGPAF does this by engaging in local and state political campaigns, in support of, or opposition to, ballot measures, referendums, recalls, initiatives and candidacies for local and state offices.

Position Summary:

NGP and NGPAF are vibrant, independent, fast-paced, non-partisan voter registration and civic organization that have seen explosive growth in the last twelve months and are headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. NGP and NGPAF seek a passionate, collaborative, and innovative professional that will join the organization during an exciting time of transformation.

The work of NGP and NGPAF is built on sound, proven policy and thoughtful political outreach. Policy is researched and crafted to support our grassroots organizing and social change in Georgia. We are seeking a well-organized, team player for a full-time, year-round position as Political Associate.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in following political policy, especially in the state of Georgia. The ideal candidate will also have strong inter-personal skills, have a strong ability to track and prioritize tasks, and establish themselves as a key contributor in a small, fast-paced environment.

Because our target communities and colleagues come from a wide range of backgrounds, applicants need to be able to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, race, equity and inclusion, and bring an inquisitiveness that results in thoughtful questions and effective pursuit of answers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Building and maintaining relationships with elected and appointed officials at the state, local and hyper-local levels across Georgia

• Supporting research, organization, and staffing of 1:1 meetings with state and local officials

• Supporting and analyzing the collection of political campaign data for candidate debriefs

• Working with a growing policy team focused on initiatives related to understanding, educating, and mobilizing voters of colors, young voters, and low-propensity voters

• Build knowledge of issue-areas in which NGP/AF works, including, but not limited to, voting rights, economic justice, reproductive justice, environmental protection, and healthcare reform

• Research political candidates, stances, and voting histories

• Train and mobilize constituent voters across the state for outreach to their elected officials

• Track, analyze and report on local legislation across the state, especially that outside Metro Atlanta

• Support the recruitment and training of local progressive candidates

• Creating materials for educating NGP/AF staff, supporters, and members on policy issues of concern;

• Supporting policy team in creation of data-collection materials as well as the collection of information collected via these modes

• Taking notes during legislative hearings, partner meetings, briefings, and webinars

• Assisting with the production of project deliverables

Required Qualifications:

• Personable, affable way of speaking

• Understanding of the political processes in Georgia including the general assembly, local city councils, and more

• Ability to distill in-depth political analysis into summaries that can be quickly applied by stakeholders including those with less data expertise;

• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;

• Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail;

• Strong writing and grammar skills as well as data accuracy;

• Experience using Excel and/or Google Sheets;

• Ability to build bridges and directly address problems with respect and candor

• Be able to manage many projects, often at the same time, through their entire life cycle in collaboration with several internal and external team members;

• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekend when necessary; and

• Demonstrated ability to multi-task, be flexible with changing priorities, and communicate clearly about deadlines and projects

• Ability to travel up to 50% of the time

Working Conditions:

• Primarily works in an office environment with a desk, chair, and quality lighting;

• The policy team is currently part-time in office with some time spent in the NGP headquarters and other spent at various political institutions as needed. In-office vs at-home schedule can be flexible, but staff is expected to be in office at least three days per week.

• Remote work within the state of Georgia is possible for non-Atlanta based candidates;

• Frequently required to sit for extended periods, reach with hands, fingers, and arms and speak and hear clearly;

• Occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl;

• May infrequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds;

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; and

• The noise level in the work environment is typically low to moderate.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary is commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the NGP and NGPAF compensation scale. Benefits include four weeks of vacation to start and access to medical, dental and vision insurance plans, as well as a retirement plan with an employer match.
