Nebraska Wesleyan University seeks applications from individuals who can work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment in the role of Residential Education Coordinator (REC). Residential Education Coordinators (RECs) are full-time, live-in Student Life professionals who supervise residential communities on campus. RECs share evening, weekend, and holiday work in support of the safety and wellbeing of residential students.
RECs report to the Assistant Dean for Student Success and Residential Education and serve on a team of Residential Education professional staff including four REC, 25 undergraduate Peer Assistants, an Administrative Assistant for Residential Education and the Assistant Dean for Student Success and Residential Education.
This position is a full-time salaried, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act with a comprehensive benefit package including paid time off, retirement, and insurance packages. In addition, Residential Education Coordinators are provided with, a furnished apartment with private laundry, meal benefits and free, reserved parking. NWU’s live-on policy allows for spouse or domestic partner residency as well as dependent residency. REC housing is pet-friendly (some restrictions apply).
Responsibilities
Major job responsibilities of the job include but are not limited to the following:
* Coordinating and overseeing all educational aspects of hall management, student concern response, student learning opportunities, conduct procedures and crisis response.
* Mentoring and supervising a staff of 5-8 undergraduate Peer Assistant staff members, investing in their development through weekly staff meetings, regular one-on-one meetings, ongoing training and feedback. Indirectly supervising a staff of 25 Peer Assistants.
* Creating residential communities that celebrate differences regardless of gender, race, religion, abilities, class, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and political affiliation.
* Developing and overseeing a community-building plan and implementing a wide variety of social and educational programming for the residential communities.
* Collaborating on Residential Education operations including Peer Assistant recruitment and hiring, housing assignment placement, summer housing (including camp and conference housing) and peer assistant fall and ongoing training.
* Serving on a rotating 24-hour on-call duty rotation for approximately 850 students, including responding to and handling crisis situations after normal business hours.
* Serving as an outreach coordinator and resource/referral agent for campus and community resources, meeting one-on-one with students referred to the student support system.
* Serving as hearing officer for student conduct cases providing adjudication, sanctions and follow-up based on independent judgment.
* Addressing student and parent concerns in order to resolve them in a timely manner.
* Collaborating on departmental assessment of student learning and program evaluation.
Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred; Bachelor’s degree and post-baccalaureate professional or educational experience in student development/Student Life required. Successful candidates will possess significant Residential Education experience, theoretical and practical knowledge of student development and its application within a residential environment, and the demonstrated ability to foster inclusive communities.
A successful candidate will also possess the following skills:
* Knowledge of or ability to learn case management systems and experience with referrals, documentation and active follow-up
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including interpersonal and intercultural communication
* Experience in effectively establishing rapport, building relationships, and mentoring college-aged students
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, think creatively, exhibit sound judgment and assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands
* The ability to use technology and social media to educate, inform and connect with residents
* Experience with and knowledge in crisis management, counseling and intervention programs
* Knowledge regarding the legal dimensions associated with housing
