Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 year(s) of experience OR BA/BS Degree in in Agriculture, natural resources, agronomy or related field of study.
Must have been certified as a silviculturist by the US Forest Service and must have been employed as a Forest Silviculturist by the US Forest Service for at least one year.
Experience required with Windows, Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), Field Sampled Vegetation (FSVEG), Forest Service Activity Tracking System (FACTS)
Duties:
Primary responsibility is to provide silvicultural guidance to district silviculturists who are not certified. In addition, assists with silvicultural planning with an emphasis on reforestation. Forest Silviculturist will provide direction and work assignments to ACES enrollees.
Meets with forest silviculturists as needed to provide in the field instruction in the art of silviculture. This would include formal stand exams, informal walk-throughs, reforestation surveys, and other data collection methods needed to meet forest silvicultural goals. Able to review survey data submitted by employees and critique remotely. 50%
Silvicultural Prescriptions: reviews timber stand diagnosis and prescriptions (in the field and remotely) developed by those not currently certified to ensure state-of-the-art land management principles are being practiced. 20%
Reforestation: assists with the reforestation program by participating in partnership conference calls and meetings when needed. Mentors silvicultural employees in data collection related to reforestation. Assists with long-term planning for reforestation including capacity, planting methods, and on-the-ground oversight of volunteer or partnership planting. 15%
NEPA: assists as needed with reforestation environmental documents 15%

FSVEG, FVS and FACTS training will be available if needed.
Travel Requirements: May be required to drive to remote forest locations. When possible coordinate with FS monitor for use of a government vehicle. Will meet requirements to drive a government vehicle.
Overnight travel: Travel to the field will occur 60% of the time, 2-3 days per week.
Health and Safety Considerations: Hard hat, field boots, and gloves. These items are required per the JHA “fieldwork”. They are required when out of the vehicle in the field. A safety vest (orange) will be required if conducting fieldwork during rifle hunting season.

Physical requirements: Physical requirements include the dexterity to reach, stand, and climb. Able to do considerable walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs, able to work in a variety of weather including temperatures ranging from 90 degrees plus in the summer to 20 degrees in the winter.
