National Grid IT team is currently seeking an innovative, adaptable, and results- Senior Software Engineer to join a team who are maintaining and enhancing mission-critical software in the balancing of the National Grid’s electricity distribution. This software collates information from hundreds of data sources, presents it to engineers in the National Control Centre, and enables them to control the nation’s electricity distribution. The work is technically challenging but highly rewarding.

About the role

The successful candidate must have strong analytical skills and be able to drill down into large and complex legacy software, understand it, and make modifications and additions safely and correctly. The majority of the code is written in Fortran (from Fortran 77 to 90); a minority in C, and even less in C++. There is inter-operability between Fortran and C, and use of Pro*C with Oracle. The software runs on OpenVMS operating system and there is some DCL coding.

The successful applicant must be a self-starter who can communicate quickly and effectively with users, business analysts, solution architects, testers, and fellow developers; must be comfortable with both working independently and reaching out to colleagues for advice and information. S/he will be welcomed into a highly supportive team of experienced developers and be expected to get up to speed quickly.

About you

1. Java background, 2 years+ 2. Desirable if has experience in Java of some of the following:a. Socket communicationb. Apache FTP libraries (or similar) c. JAXB (or similar)d. JDBCe. Apache Axis 2 Web Services 3. Automated test experience in BDD using Cucumber JVM or similar.4. Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL).5. Use of Configuration Control using IBM Rational Team Concert or similar.6. Knowledge of Ant, Maven, Junit would be useful.7. Desirable other programming languages – Groovy, Python

Substantial experience of development and maintenance in a procedural language is essential.

Basic understanding in working in an Agile setup is highly desirable.

An ability to write clear functional specifications for the software is highly desirable.

A background awareness of the concepts involved in electrical engineering and energy distribution would be a plus.

A competitive salary between £45,000 – 59,000 – dependent on capability. As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
