Opportunity Summary

The primary role of the Control Room Operator (CRO) is to operate the plant from the distributed control system while ensuring that all plant equipment is operated within design parameters. Monitors plant operations, making adjustments as needed to optimize performance. Monitor the operations of emissions control equipment and adjust to meet State and Federal permits.

Primary Functions

• Operate under the direction of the Lead Operator and O&M Manager for all aspects of plant operations. Operate the plant and all associated equipment through the DCS system to ensure operation within specified parameters.
• Monitor plant operations, making adjustments as needed to optimize performance
• Monitor the operations of emissions control equipment and adjust to meet State and Federal permits
• Troubleshoot equipment that fails during operation to provide assistance to the maintenance department in identifying required repairs
• Perform proficiency watches outside the Control Room as required. Effectively communicate plant status to the AO and Lead Operator as required.
• Ensure that the Control Room is maintained in a clean and safe manner
• Maintain accurate records of plant operations. Review and analyze records for pending failures
• Conduct plant startups and shutdowns
• Conduct weekly and monthly checklists
• Assist with the Plant Training Program. Be a resource for other technicians in the program, and provide feedback/documentation to the Lead Operator.
• Train Auxiliary Operators in plant DCS operations
• Be proactive in seeking responsibility to support the business needs of the company
• Cover Flex Leaves and Disability leaves as required
• Performs other duties as required by plant conditions
• Effectively communicates plant status to plant management as required
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance as assigned
• Support planned and forced outages as required

Working Relationships

The CRO s to the O&M Manager and responds to direction from the Lead Operator. The CRO provides work direction to AOs. The CRO may also give direction to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, requiring stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. “On call” status will periodically be required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. Employees will abide with extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Job Qualifications

• Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school is required. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable.
• Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry desirable
• Experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant. Experience in the direct operation of a combined cycle large frame gas turbine power plant preferred.
• Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements is desired
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable
• Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable
• Experience reading and interpreting DCS logic
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
• Must have excellent organizational skills
