Principal Engineer – Power/Energy – Location flexible

J Murphy & Sons are currently recruiting for a Principal Engineer to support the Engineering Manager day to day. We are a leading provider of innovative and integrated power solutions across many areas including overhead and underground cross-country cabling, substations, rail infrastructures and renewable energy infrastructures.

You will be working with one of the Top 25 Best Large Companies in the UK to work for currently ranked by Best Companies. This is a fantastic opportunity to become the focal point for external designers’ interface into the wider Murphy Power Engineering and Design function.    

What you’ll be doing

* Assisting the development of internal civil engineering design capability for Energy projects
* Creation and updating of design programmes
* Leading the technical delivery of civil designs including producing and checking calculations and drawing production against project scope, British and European standards and industry best practice
* Undertaking Design Risk Assessments and actively contributing to project HARARD/HAZID/HAZON reviews
* Developing civil design and construction strategies including producing scope of works
* Engaging consultants and other specialist suppliers through the procurement function
* Coordinating with Design coordination/management functions and interfacing with other design disciplines
* Identifying key risks and opportunities – developing mitigating actions and ensuring adequate provisions are made
* Undertaking due diligence on documentation prior to client contract signing
* Undertaking supplier quotation assessments, qualification and alignments
* Reviewing external civil designs to ensure specification compliance, SHESQ, constructability and value has been considered
* Offering expertise in client specifications, procedures, design codes and industry best practice
* Developing and leading initiatives for improvements and efficiencies for civil engineering design delivery and operational output through continuous improvement activities in collobratin with the Quality function
* Responsible for junior members teams personal development and training including undertaking the
* Delegated Engineer role for Graduate and Apprentice ICE Training Agreements

Who we are looking for

* Bachelor or Masters degree in Civil Engineering
* Experience working within Electrical Transmission and Distribution and/or Oil and Gas sectors
* Comprehensive HV substation design and construction experience
* National Grid TP137 CDAE Civil Substation or Cadent/National Grid G17/35 Gas transmission authorisations
* Experience within civil design environment preferably within a consultancy environment
* Knowledge and experience of a Principal Contractors duties as Principal Designers under CDM Regulations 2015
