Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS) is a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute www.mcri.edu.au and provides a wholly integrated genetic testing, diagnostic and counselling service for health professionals, patients and their families across Victoria, Australia and globally. Our clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors work in close consultation with our medical scientists to provide the most accurate interpretation for complex genetic tests. VCGS also plays a pivotal role in research and development, driving translational research and policy development in the field of genetics. VCGS’ operations are supported by a growing list of software tools and solutions, deployed across all business units. These include patient and laboratory information management systems, data analytics and integration capabilities. To achieve its purpose as a translational partner of MCRI, VCGS recognises the importance of early adoption of new technologies and systems that aid data integration and interoperability.
The Software Systems and Integration Unit is charged with the delivery, maintenance and management of core pathology software. Unit staff cooperate closely with MCRI IT and the VCGS Clinical Bioinformatics and Development Teams and form part of VCGS’ unique ecosystem of clinical variant curators, clinical bioinformaticians, laboratory professionals, clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors, commercial and operations staff who are all committed to supporting the delivery of world-leading genetics and genomics services.
Your Opportunity:
The Software Systems and Integration Unit at VCGS is seeking a dedicated and experienced Software Developer. The successful candidate will work closely with team members and the SSI Internal Projects Lead and the heads of the business units to ensure a full understanding of the operational, strategic and management context and consequences of the decisions associated with the software systems projects and associated alterations to work practices. Our ideal candidate will possess a thoughtful approach to problem identification and solutions and enjoy working independently and within a team on projects. The Software Developer will be confident working with relational databases and writing SQL queries along with experience using Python and or JavaScript. Your outstanding interpersonal, presentation and writing skills allow you to communicate effectively with various stakeholders. Experience administering MS SQL databases and knowledge of Linux is highly regarded.
Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maintaining and developing the software systems to ensure optimal performance.
Showing initiative by identifying and designing solutions to improve the software systems.
Liaising with relevant laboratory groups and software vendors for integration activities.
Applying best practice software systems development methodologies to develop robust, scalable, verifiable, and accreditable solutions.
Ensuring the health of the database and assist in the development of database improvements.
Champion policies and processes and role model compliance including successful completion of compliance training.
Exercising initiative and offer suggestions for improving processes.
To be successful in this role you must:
A tertiary qualification in BSc or BA / Honours / master’s in computer science, software engineering, information technology.
An appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
Experience with relational databases, writing SQL queries and/or stored procedures.
Thoughtful approach to problem identification and solutions.
Good stakeholder management skills.
Experience with software version control systems such as Git.
Experience using Python or JavaScript.
