DE&S are looking for talented, motivated and skilled university graduates to join our Finance & Accounting (F&A) Graduate Scheme and become our F&A professionals of the future.

Our F&A Graduate Scheme is a two year development programme focused around Finance and Accountancy roles across different areas of DE&S.

You’ll rotate through several placements within DE&S that will give you the opportunity to learn about different aspects of F&A. You’ll gain real experience in:

• forecasting the future budget;
• reviewing and creating accruals;
• providing financial analysis to support decision making;
• involvement in developing costings for business cases;
• tracking costs to contracts and ensuring they are recorded correctly; and
• using financial systems.

Your hands-on experience will be underpinned by MOD and DE&S specific training as well as study towards the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting.

At the end of year two, provided you’ve met the required performance standard, we’ll support you to follow your passion, progressing into a role that reflects the interests and skills you’ve developed throughout the programme.

As a note, because of the classification of work in some areas of DE&S, applicants who hold a dual nationality may be restricted in where they can be placed.

Also, you may be placed into the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) for a placement or upon completion of the scheme.

Q: Do you accept exemptions?

A: The Graduate Scheme is designed to train and develop entry level accountancy trainees and therefore we expect that all Graduates will study the complete syllabus regardless of any exemptions that they may be entitled to.

Q: I am part qualified in CIMA/ACCA/other accountancy qualification, can I still apply?

A: As above, the scheme is designed to recruit Graduates to develop their professional and personal skills in a structured training programme. In order for the business to continue to fund your professional training, you will need to provide evidence that you have not incurred more than one fail across the entire professional qualification. We will not be able to accept you on to the scheme if you have incurred two or more failures.

Q: How will the training be delivered?

A: Training will be delivered in Bristol by an approved training provider who have the dedicated expertise, support and training facilities to ensure you are fully prepared for your exams.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will vary depending on the placement you’re in, but broadly speaking, we can tell you you’ll be:

• providing support to Finance & Accounting staff across the business, including assisting with financial reporting and administrative activities;
• building and maintaining a network of internal business contacts and peers to share and gain knowledge and identify opportunities to learn and develop;
• owning and driving your personal and professional development across the business;
• building awareness and understanding of how both the Finance & Accounting function and the wider business operate;
• taking on foundational and professional training, working towards the achievement of CIMA membership;
• throwing yourself into whatever activities are needed on your particular placement – which might include, for instance, budgeting, forecasting, inventory accounting, or systems management.

What you will be assessed against

Your CV must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• Candidates must have a degree or be predicted to achieve a degree (minimum 2:1) by August 2022.

It is also beneficial to your application if you can demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• Have a degree within Finance or Accounting.
• Relevant work experience, demonstrating project skills, including through internships or placements.
