Mental Health Support Team (MHST) – North-East Shropshire
The Bee U service is excited to be recruiting to 4 Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) posts. The Bee U service is a partnership between Midland Partnership Foundation Trust, The Children’s Society, Kooth and Helios. We all work together in a multi-disciplinary teams in the interests of children and young people across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. These posts will form our next wave of Mental Health Support Teams within Shropshire covering the area of Whitchurch and Market Drayton schools. We successfully implemented this new service in 2020 and currently have 2 teams serving a number of schools within Telford & Wrekin as well as within Shropshire. With 1 in 6 school children having a mental health problem the expansion of our service will allow us to deliver much needed early intervention and prevention support to children and young people within schools, as well as supporting school’s to develop their whole school approaches.
The trainee EMHP roles reflect the government’s priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people as outlined in the 2017 Green Papers Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health. The new EMHP role provides a new resource to support children and young people who are experiencing common low-level mental health difficulties in an environment familiar to them. It is specifically aimed at meeting the needs of those who may not currently receive or be suitable for a specialist mental health services for children and young people. You will be trained to assess and support children and young people (C&YP) with common mental health difficulties, particularly mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and behavioural difficulties. You will offer a range of low intensity interventions, primarily in a school or college setting that are based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and guided self-help. You will also have the opportunity to develop whole school approaches to educational staff on mental health and wellbeing and deliver group interventions and assemblies.
You will be supported throughout your training year by more senior practitioners within the MHST and receive quality supervision from your team supervisor as well as support from Derby University. As well as being part of the MHST you will be working in designated schools and developing close working relationships with the Mental Health Lead for that school as well as with healthcare and local authority colleagues.
The training programme for this post starts in January 2023, is 12 months in duration and will consist of academic and supervised practice. As a trainee you will spend 2 days per week studying at Derby University, with 2 days in service consolidating your learning into practice and developing relationships with your allocated schools. You will be provided with 1 days study day each week during your training year.
Delivery of the taught programme will be provided through a combination of taught days at Derby University, independent self-guided study days and clinical experience gained in your school settings and within the BeeU service, where you will work under supervision. This will allow you to gain experience across healthcare and educational settings to obtain the level of competences required to deliver high-quality, evidence-based early interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems. On successful completion of training,Trainee EMHPs will be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and capabilities to work as a qualified EMHP as autonomous and responsible practitioners within their scope of practice, alongside education colleagues.
EMHPs will play a key role as members of the new Mental Health Support Teams, in supporting schools to deliver their whole school approaches to promote the mental health and wellbeing.
Successful candidates will be employed on a fixed contract during their 12 month training period NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) Band 4 pay scale and offered a permanent position on the NHS AfC Band 5 pay scale on successful completion of training.
