We are seeking an innovative and skilled Senior Software Engineer with a passion for pushing the boundaries of technology. In this role, you will contribute to developing, designing, and operating large-scale data systems that make up our next-generation platform. As a part of our team, your work will have a direct impact on people globally and on one of the world’s most significant data platforms.
What you’ll do:
- Contribute to the development of the Semantic Fabric, a cutting-edge technology delivering semantic indexing and search experiences across Microsoft Office 365.
- Collaborate with multiple engineering teams, contributing to service architecture design and implementation.
- Build scalable, high-performance software services over large datasets with low latency and high availability.
- Ensure the platform adheres to Microsoft’s strict data privacy and compliance standards.

Responsibilities
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Semantic Fabric Team, you will be entrusted with a range of responsibilities that are key to the successful development and evolution of our cutting-edge technology platform. Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the conceptualization, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of advanced software solutions for the Semantic Fabric.
- Defining the architectural vision for the Semantic Fabric and driving its execution by coordinating with other teams and stakeholders.
- Serving as a technical mentor for other engineers in the team and fostering a culture of technical excellence.
- Providing guidance and making decisions on the use of various technologies and best practices in software engineering.
- Proactively identifying, communicating, and addressing technical and organizational challenges related to the delivery of the Semantic Fabric.
- Actively participating in the broader engineering community at Microsoft to share knowledge, learn from others, and influence the use of best practices and cutting-edge technologies.
- Regularly reviewing the performance and architecture of the Semantic Fabric, and driving improvements to ensure scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
- Representing the Semantic Fabric team in discussions with other teams, stakeholders, and customers, and effectively communicating the capabilities and benefits of the Semantic Fabric.
- Ensuring compliance with Microsoft’s security and privacy policies in all aspects of software development and operation.
Identifying and managing risks that could impact the delivery or performance of the Semantic Fabric and implementing strategies to mitigate these risks.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 4+ years experience in designing, building, and maintaining large-scale data systems.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience, specifically with coding in C#.
- OR equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of Back-End focused engineering experience.
- Familiarity with Semantic Search or Indexing technology is preferred.
- Experience using Rust Programming Language is a plus but not required.
- Proficiency in C# or C/C++
- Expertise in any modern continuous delivery/deployment system.
- Proven leadership and mentorship skills with a track record of driving technical excellence within a team.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills, with the ability to think quickly and thoroughly.
- Proven verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Software Engineering IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 – $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 – $238,600 per year.
