Problem Solver? Logical Thinker? We might be the right solution for you.
We are MI5. And we gather intelligence from within the UK. Our work helps to protect the UK from a range of serious threats – everything from terrorism to organised crime, cyber-threats to espionage. Technology sits at the heart of everything we do. It enables us to disrupt serious threats to national security. And this is your chance to be part of that work.
The Role
Joining us as a Software Engineering Apprentice, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from software delivery teams that will offer you a unique insight into the work of the intelligence agencies. Through a variety of placements, you’ll help to build technology that catches criminals and improves our ability to tackle threats. Our work is constantly evolving, so you will too. Over the course of the three years, you’ll become familiar with some of the world’s most sophisticated electronic equipment and gain practical experience that simply isn’t available anywhere else. What’s more, you’ll work towards a BSc Honours Degree in Digital and Technology Solutions while you do it.
About You
We don’t expect you to know everything – in fact, we’re looking for people who want to learn. But you should have a genuine interest in programming and technology. You’ll also need (or expect to have by September 2022) 72 UCAS points, and a minimum GCSE grade 4/C in English Language and maths – or equivalent functional skills (level 2). You might also have some understanding of JavaScript, data storage technology or cloud technology – although it is definitely not essential.
As an organisation that values and nurtures talent, we’re committed to helping you fulfil your potential. So you can expect excellent rewards and benefits, an inclusive workplace and supportive training.
At MI5 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodiverse conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce.

Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. Each case will be carefully considered on its own facts. You can apply at the age of 17 years and 6 months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member. Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK.
