The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of progressive industrial placements, which will commence from July 2022 until July 2023.
We are hiring for Software Engineering – Industrial Placement 2022 to be based in Exeter with hybrid working with a salary of £17,900 plus amazing benefits.

As our Software Engineering – Industrial Placement 2022 you will have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2022 – July 2023) within our Science directorate, working in a scientific software engineering environment, from weather forecast modelling to climate prediction analysis. Working alongside 500 world leading scientists, you will gain valuable experience and absorb information from IT professionals all of which will help develop your skills and help you put what you have learnt at University into practice.
During your placement you will have a clear learning plan and you will be supporting each other with projects, set up lunch groups and socials. This Industrial Placement is an exciting opportunity to see first-hand what we do and make a real impact that the Met Office truly values, whilst developing yourself for the start of your career.
1. Studying for an undergraduate degree with a significant numeracy, science (mathematics or a physical science) and/or IT element such as Computer Science or Data Science which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
2. Ability to learn and apply software tools and knowledge of at least one programming language.
3. A willingness to learn and apply good software engineering discipline
4. Demonstrated ability to work using own initiative
5. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills
6. Effective communication skills
7. Evidence of working and collaborating well as a member of a team
