We’re hiring a Senior Scientific Software Engineer (Climate Observations) to help us make a difference to our planet.
Our Senior Scientific Software Engineer (Climate Observations) will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and working from our Exeter HQ.
We are open to a range of flexible working options including full- or part-time working (minimum 22.2 hours or 3 days per week) with a regular or irregular pattern of hours.

As our Senior Scientific Software Engineer (Climate Observations) , your starting salary will be £37418.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £41159.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.
Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £51,767 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.
In addition you will be paid £3000 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.
The Climate Monitoring and Attribution team at the Met Office Hadley Centre is an internationally recognised group that specialises in working with observations to monitor and understand our climate. In this role, you will be primarily developing software to process climate observations, although there will be opportunities for you to collaborate and interact with other Met Office software engineers and scientists. Our work is used internationally and we provide climate information to the UK government and the general public.
This role offers the opportunity to work on a number of projects, e.g. developing a large software system for routinely monitoring different key climate variables – https://climate.metoffice.cloud/; developing and improving the maturity of our existing dataset production software systems to make them more efficient, robust and transparent; and contributing to satellite climate data record development with the European Space Agency and EUMETSAT, as well as working on the Met Office Hadley Centre Climate Programme.

If successful, you will occasionally need to work at our state of the art office in Exeter for team days and face to face collaboration as required, we are unable to offer expenses for travel to your normal place of work. Please ask at interview how often this requirement is likely to be.
