Dean of Community Learning

Overview

Meriden is actively breaking away from the traditional model of school education. As part of this pursuit, the

Dean of Community Learning will investigate, initiate and oversee exciting and innovative connections with the

wider community that will bring worthwhile learning and growth opportunities to the School for Meriden girls.

He/she will be a member of the Dean team and on the School’s Leadership team.

The Dean of Community Learning will have a strong sense of the trajectory of education in Australia, and be

able to investigate, introduce and oversee bold but realistic ideas for the benefit of the education of Meriden

girls.

Leadership

The Dean of Community Learning contributes to the leadership of the School in all its areas – academically,

pastorally, cocurricularly and spiritually. This includes attending staff prayer meetings, publicly praying as

required, leading Bible devotions as required, and modelling a Christian lifestyle. Attendance at, and

contribution to, leadership discussions and meetings are inherent in the role. The Dean of Community Learning

attends all formal school functions in a leadership capacity, and attends informal school functions as often as

possible.

Staff reporting to the Dean of Community Learning include:

• Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator

• Cadets Coordinator

• Heads of Department and Year Coordinators, on occasion

• House Patrons

• Tertiary Advisors

The Dean of Community Learning reports to the Head of Campus, the Head of Teaching and Learning and/or

the Head of Student Wellbeing as necessary, and works closely with the Dean team in areas of overlap and

dual interest such as community service and global programs.

Responsibilities of the Dean of Community Learning:

Cocurricular Responsibilities

• Oversees the arrangements for the overnight activities including camps. This includes liaising with the

School and parents before, during and after such events

• Oversees the Year 9 Community Service program

• Oversees the Adopt-a-Town program or equivalent

• Manages the appointment and work of the House Officers including inter-house events

• Oversees the House service weeks.

Curricular Responsibilities

• Oversees any curricular overnight field studies excursions

• Oversees any subject-specific overnight tours

• Initiates and maintains University connections with the School

• Investigates and oversees any university opportunities that are open to secondary students

• Oversees the Careers program in Year 10 in conjunction with the Tertiary Advisors

• Assists the Dean of Academic Care with interviews of students regarding subject choice

• Organises the experts-in-residence program

• Assists in organising relevant guest speakers

• Organises, sources and cares for any, special guests at special events, as requested.

Staffing Responsibilities

• Engages in the development of the profession through relationship building with tertiary education

providers to identify education graduates who would be suitable for working at Meriden

• Investigates the possibility of a Teaching Assistant program

• Links with international schools to establish a possible pathway for teachers who are returning to

Australia

• Assists in the running of Open Mornings especially in regards to students from non-Meriden primary

school.

Other Responsibilities

• Teaches 0.4 FTE

• Has a pastoral group (a Tutor Group)

• Works with the Leadership Team in school activities as required

• Other duties as reasonably requested by the Principal.
