Full-time (1.0 FTE) Fixed Term (12-months) contract, based in Darwin

This is an exciting opportunity to grow and enhance your skills in a large not-for-profit organisation. Menzies School of Health Research is looking for an Accountant to play an integral role in ensuring the objectives of the Finance Department are met by providing accounting and compliance services. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accountant develop their skills as part of a small finance team. The role will assist in ensuring that Menzies Compliance requirements and are met and be part of continuous improvement of internal controls.

The Accountant will also:

• Form key partnerships with stakeholders across departments to advance the speed, accuracy and integrity of financial data.
• Assist in developing and delivering meaningful economic reports and analysis based on an intimate knowledge of policies, procedures and accounting standards.
• Provide reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, ensuring the integrity of the general ledger.
• Maintain project grant files, including reconciliation of accounts, record keeping, internal reporting and liaison with responsible managers and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with funding and service agreements.
• Provide supervisory guidance and leadership to lower-level staff and foster a positive and high-performing workplace culture.

With over 35 years of achievement in health and medical research, Menzies is currently setting its strategic direction over the future 5 years. This is an exciting time to join the Finance team in the Accountant role.

What you will bring to the role

To be successful in this role you must be highly motivated, organised, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. You will have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate financial information to non-finance stakeholders.

You also possess:

• A tertiary equivalent accounting and/or business degree qualification and a minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role.
• Exceptional written & oral communication skills with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective communication, relationships and networks with colleagues, stakeholders and partners.
• Demonstrated high-level computer literacy skills, particularly relevant finance solution systems, Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office products.
• Be able to facilitate staff training and development in Menzies’ contract practices.

For appointment at a higher level 7, you will have:

• Tertiary equivalent accounting and/or business degree qualification with at least four (4) years’ subsequent experience in a similar role; or extensive experience and management expertise.
• Knowledge and understanding of the auditing processes and requirements.
• Be responsible for the coordination and completion of end of month and end of year tasks.
• Contribute to developing and operating processes and systems of continuous improvement.
