Primary Purpose:

The purpose of the Mentor Coordinator is to match at-risk students with one-to-one mentors who provide academic support and guidance; to collaborate with existing extended day/year academic assistance; to provide case management services, community-based prevention and outreach. The worker will work closely with the school principals and counselors but will report to the Chief of Communications. This role will also assist with preparation of written materials for district publications.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor degree required with emphasis in social work, psychology, and or education. Two or more years experience in mentoring, youth development, or communications, working within community organizations and/or schools preferred. Strong organizational, writing, verbal and interpersonal skills. Creativity and flexibility are essential in assuming significant responsibility. Experience working in racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities preferred.

§ Prepare routine reports and correspondence.

§ Demonstrated skills in writing, proofreading, and editing.

§ Develop, implement, and coordinate events to promote Project Mentor.

§ Quickly identify problem areas or situations, evaluate problems causes, and take appropriate action to resolve problems identified.

§ Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

§ Exercise tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs.

Mentoring Job Responsibilities:

• Have expert knowledge of mentoring program policies and procedures

• Support the Department in maintaining/updating policies and procedures as needed
• Develop and manage relationships with schools and community-based organizations
• Build strong “working” relationship with mentoring program advisory
• Oversee inquiry and orientation process to ensure excellent public relations and customer service
• Create and oversee implementation of an ongoing mentor recruitment plan, including development of an annual recruitment and quarterly activity plans, development and distribution of program marketing materials, presentations to targeted organizations, and ensuring a presence at key community events, etc.
• Perform and oversee participant screening, training, matching, support and supervision, recognition, and closure activities
• Oversee organization and implementation of mentor/mentee group events/field trips
• Plan and implement recognition activities for program participants
• Coordinate Service Learning Projects
• Provide referral and resources support to mentees and families

• Attend regional/national conferences to increase knowledge of mentoring program and best practices
• Support campus goals of prevention to maintain a healthy and safe school environment
• Consult with supervisor, administrative and instructional staff as needed
• Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned
• Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.
• Comply with school district board policies
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Communications Job Responsibilities:

• Assist with writing copy for all brochures and publications produced by public information office.
• Read copy to detect errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
• Assist with production, publication, and distribution of district publications and news releases.
• Maintain a log of media calls and information requests.
• Maintain physical and computerized department files, including publication mailing lists.
• Compile information and prepare reports as needed.
• Respond to routine inquiries; refer appropriate inquiries to public information officer.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Working Conditions:

• Very little possibility of safety risks
• Light to moderate lifting of training materials
• Occasional walking, standing, stooping, bending and reaching
• Occasional lifting and moving of moderate to heavy objects

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting is involved. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $62,740.00 – $88,879.00 per year
