Job Summary:
As a key player of Lumibird’s LIDAR team in Ottawa, the ideal candidate will be responsible for leading the mechanical aspect of new product development. The incumbent will be expected to support the production and engineering team with the development, verification, and test of multiple mechanical and opto-mechanical designs for wide range of markets with scientific, automotive, aerospace and defense customers. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for planning, designing, implementing and optimizing the production process necessary to manufacture Coherent and Time-Of-Flight LIDAR systems. The Manufacturing engineer will work with both production and engineering teams to ensure the

successful transition of opto-mechanical hardware and vision systems from ongoing Research and Development activities to production through new product introduction initiatives and continuous improvement activities. The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of engineering production support of the LIDAR systems, including; 3D modeling, component selection, drawing and Bill Of Materials updates, cost reductions, process optimization, analysis & simulation, characterization and testing of hardware. When necessary, the Manufacturing Engineer will

also provide guidance, advice and leadership to junior and/or production staff in support of achieving the project objectives. The ideal candidate will therefore be part of a small, but talented, multi-disciplinary team, dedicated to the development of innovative LIDAR solutions.

Responsibilities:The Manufacturing Engineer will be expected to:

• Evaluate existing manufacturing processes and recommend/implement changes to reduce manufacturing time and costs, while improving quality
• Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout
• Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods for finished product and process capabilities
• Provide manufacturing decision-making information by working with the Materials Planner, Manufacturing Leads, and Operations Director
• Manage the transition process of new product designs from engineering to production
• Define and coordinate the generation of all required manufacturing documentation such as work instructions, test procedures, data summaries, and all other relevant documentation.
• Work with the Quality Department, vendors and contractors to ensure the quality of supplied product.
• Maintain familiarity with all product regulatory requirements to ensure new products conform to the most current required standards
• Prepare and update assembly drawings, parts lists, bills of materials and assembly instructions
• Perform design trade analyses based on existing technologies, target applications, design constraints, and project resources
• Provide manufacturing assistance via troubleshooting and problem resolution of existing products
• Contribute to new (and existing) product definition, specifications and documentation
• Continuously search for improvement and efficiencies in design, development, verification and test tools
• Cooperate with the multi-disciplinary R&D development team including electrical, optical and software
• Support the assembly, integration, and verification of electronical, mechanical, and optical systems
• Support troubleshooting of electronic, mechanical, opto-mechanical and opto-electronic assemblies
• Use initiative, backed with a sound understanding of fundamental concepts, to develop creative and novel approaches to challenges posed during assembly integration and/or testing
• Cooperate with the multi-disciplinary R&D development team to deliver quality projects on-time
• Support the engineering team in the design and development of new products and new technologies
• Provide leadership and guidance to production staff and engineers as appropriate
• Provide technical support to other Lumibird subsidiaries and departments as required
• Support external relations with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, universities, external laboratories and other business fields.
• Participate in occasional international travel

Qualifications:The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent
• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and opto-mechanical systems design
• Proficient in 3D CAD modeling
• Experience creating, releasing and modifying product drawings, documents and Bills of Materials
• Familiarity with the design for electronics and Printed Wiring Board assemblies
• Experience in the assembly, alignment, and testing of opto-mechanical subsystems
• Experience in New Product Introduction and development within an R&D and production environment
• Expertise in interfacing with customers, suppliers, sales staff, product development engineers, and managers in a team-oriented environment
• Highly organized, with an ability to efficiently handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Excellent judgment, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Superior verbal, and written, communication skills
• Strong desire to be part of a research and development team that is creating the next generation of LIDAR solutions for harsh environments
• The candidate must be eligible for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and Security Clearance at the Level II/Secret

In addition, the following qualifications would be considered an asset:

• Experience architecting, designing, assembling and testing light delivery and collection subsystems
• Proficient in the development of systems and selecting parts for harsh environments, such as automotive, defense and/or aerospace
• Skilled in the use of Solid Works and ANSYS
• Expertise in algorithm prototyping using Python or MATLAB
• Opto-electrical and opto-mechanical design experience
• Familiarity with standard machining tools and practices
• Advanced math and algorithm implementation experience
• Experience and competence supporting proposals to funding groups
• Experience with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100
• Familiarity with ASME and IPC standards
• Bilingual in French/English
