Solar Applications Engineer

The role is in LightEdison’s Growth Group which executes engineering and estimating functions to support advancing projects from concept to contract, specifically to a full Engineering Procurement and Construction Agreement (EPCA). This role performs organizational and technical tasks to support Project Engineers and Senior Estimators in completing core project engineering deliverables.

Education and Certification Requirements

• A 4-year bachelor’s degree in a related technical field OR
• A 2-year degree in technical field and proven work experience demonstrating you can execute the role effectively

Travel

• Travel anticipated to be 20-30% of the time.

Specific Roles & Accountabilities

• Develop conceptual solar designs using Helioscope and/or CAD
• Develop and assist with customer information requests
• Organize project files and track project details in company software systems
• Conduct solar site visits during project engineering phase
• Assist with coordination of specialist engineers and firms to produce cohesive 30% and 60% Design Development Engineering documents that meet company standards
• Read and review design prints and provide drawing markups or shop drawings to communicate information or changes that may be required
• Assist Project Engineers to complete project budgets by obtaining materials and labor quotes from vendors and trade partners
• Draft subcontractor SOWs, RFPs, RFQs and working with subcontractors to get general cost estimates that can be used for project estimating
• Develop a Bill of Materials (BOM) from a set of drawings
• Advise clients or colleagues on topics such as solar designs, solar estimating
• Use data analysis techniques to get practical information from raw data
• Analyze, interpret, or create graphical representations of energy data, using engineering software
• Communicating data analysis findings to clients and colleagues
• Create standard operating procedures
• Assisting in the development, updating and archiving of standard operating procedures
• Perform work according to internally developed standard operating procedures
• Identifying opportunities to optimize project value through improved performance, reduced costs, minimized risk or other means

Desired Experience and Competencies

• Experience drafting subcontractor work scopes, RFPs, RFQs and working with subcontractors to get general cost estimates that can be used for project estimating
• Experience coordinating or assisting with coordinating project engineering activities including but not limited to: site layout, pull tests, geotechnical s, all engineering required to support project permitting, energy production, civil, mechanical, electrical, data acquisition, staking, surveying, engineering scheduling and all engineering required to support project development of projects.
• Ability and/or experience creating project budgets and estimates
• Ability and/or experience creating project schedules in Primavera P6, MS Project, Smartsheet, or similar
• Experience coordinating project engineering functions including but not limited to design and engineering of complete solar systems including racking, modules, inverters, energy storage, switchgear and BOS materials.
• Coordinating accurate energy production estimates using PVSyst, Helioscope and other industry standard tools
• Experience in the construction industry and/or in-depth knowledge of traditional construction/renovation processes, language and norms
• NABCEP Certification
• Hands-on electrical installation experience
• Experience working with and knowledge of key solar and electrical codes, NEC, NFPA, IFC etc.
• Experience with electrical calculations and specification of balance of systems materials including wire sizing, conduits etc.
• Experience specifying major materials (panels, racking, inverters, transformers, switchgear) and experience working with these vendors
