As an Underwriter in casualty insurance, you’ll develop, grow and maintain sizable, complex, diversified books of business while working closely with agents and brokers through frequent travel and agency visits to assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions and negotiate deals that maximize profitability and meet business goals.

This includes specialty teams: Sharing Economy, Environmental, Construction, Inland Marine, Healthcare, Public Entity, Energy, Equipment Breakdown and Farm/Agribusiness.

• Problem solver: You’ll crunch the numbers and review the data to determine risk selection, premiums, policies and conditions, as well as identify opportunities for improved growth, profit and diversification
• Strategic Account Manager: As part of your portfolio strategy, you’ll ensure a profitable book of Property and Casualty insurance by writing new accounts with premiums of at all levels, and growing successful agent and broker relationships and pursuing renewals
• Conscientious professional: Understanding that the deal isn’t done until the paperwork is filed, you’ll document and compile comprehensive account reviews, state-compliant sign-offs and referrals
• Clear communicator: Demonstrating a high level of responsiveness and service, you’ll maintain and nurture successful relationships with agents and brokers, while presenting proposals, negotiating deals and obtaining approvals
• Collaborative mentor: Contributing to overall team success, you’ll mentor and coach underwriters in both a technical and professional capacity—sharing best practices and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement

What you’ve got:

Experience

• 2 or more years of relevant commercial underwriting experience
• Experience with commercial lines underwriting experience preferred

Skills

• Analytical, problem-solving capabilities
• Strong territory management skills
• Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team-focused attitude
• An aptitude for building rewarding relationships with agents and brokers, peer underwriters, account analysts and junior underwriters

Knowledge

• Command of insurance finance and actuarial concepts
• Advanced knowledge of insurance products, underwriting, risk selection, pricing and marketplaces, as well as regulatory issues in relevant territories
• Understanding of contract language, including regulatory and policy differences among applicable states
• Familiarity with continuous improvement processes and tools
• Expertise in one area of underwriting and ability to provide updates to other underwriters

Education

• A bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Chartered Property Casual Underwriter or other professional insurance designation preferred
