Libertas College Prep is a charter school serving students in grades 4-8 in Leimert Park in South Los Angeles. Our school is founded on the belief that all students can thrive and be successful in a rigorous, structured, and supportive environment.

Libertas College Prep has an intensive focus on literacy. We utilize a nontraditional starting point of 4th grade to ensure that all students receive literacy support through the transition from “learning to read” in 3rd grade to “reading to learn” in 4th grade and beyond. Our school opened in August 2015 and serves the neighborhood student population, including many first generation college-bound students.

Libertas was recognized as a Top School by Innovate Schools through USC’s Rossier School of Education and a California Distinguished School for 2020 and 2021.

About the Role

The Dean of Students is a full-time position accountable for working directly with the Assistant Principals to create a strong school culture and individual student behavior supports. The DoS will create systems and routines that promote a positive culture including but not limited to developing programming for community circles and town halls, and creating a curriculum for our behavior management course. This person will work to ensure that our students are supported through character development and high expectations that will bring our school closer to accomplishing our mission of student achievement.

In this role you will:

• Work with the leadership team to execute a vision for scholar culture and work

• Support scholars to meet the school goals (joy, homework completion, school culture, work habits, GPA)

• Collaborate with Assistant Principals to train teachers to execute a scholar management system in classrooms and the larger educational setting by working with scholar(s) involved, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders

• Work with the Assistant Principals to create behavioral intervention plans for students, and to ensure that the discipline code of conduct is supporting students with special needs

• Support in overseeing all whole-school parts of the school day (entry, lunch, detention, dismissal) 

• Implement with fidelity all shared systems at Libertas (homework policy, behavior 
management system, uniform policy, etc.) 

• Supervise detentions and maintain culture and behavior during detention

• Supervise arrival, dismissal, lunch, and break/transition periods promoting and ensuring a positive school culture

• Oversee the reset room for students who have been removed from class; coach students 
through character reflections and prepare them to successfully reenter class ready to learn 
and exhibit the school’s character values. 

• Collaborate with Assistant Principals to co-lead school culture portion of quarterly Data Days and set quarterly school culture focus. 

• Build relationships and meet with parents to plan for their scholar’s success

Experience, mindsets, skills, and qualifications: 


• Belief in the Libertas mission and educational model. 

• Four or more years of experience working in a college preparatory urban high school or 
middle school.
• Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred. 

• Team player and whatever-it-takes approach to solving problems and finding solutions. 

• Very strong classroom management and discipline skills. 

• Sweat-the-small-stuff orientation toward school culture management. 

• Excellent communication skills, especially with teachers, students and parents. 

• Extremely high standards for student achievement and student professionalism

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $58,000.00 – $72,000.00 per year
