Adjunct faculty hold part-time teaching contracts in a department and program and teach credit-bearing courses toward Leighton University degrees. An adjunct faculty may also be assigned to teach developmental courses. An adjunct faculty’s teaching is an integral part of the University’s learning community and teaches courses online. In keeping with its mission and vision, Leighton University actively engages adjunct faculty experts in their disciplines and has a passion for teaching. The adjunct is hired on a part-time basis to meet the instructional needs that current faculty members cannot meet. Reporting to the Dean, the adjunct in English / Journalism/ Communications performs instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies, and procedures of the University. Further, the adjunct faculty member’s relationship to the student, or students, is one of instructor and facilitator of learning.
Nature and Scope
Under the Dean’s direction, an adjunct will be expected to conduct high impact research and teach undergraduate courses in the major or in the General Education program. Leighton University engages an Adjunct faculty for the following area/disciplines:

Adjunct faculty’s approved teaching load must be less than 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester and no more than 18 credit hours for the Academic Year.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Teach courses via online or other web-enhanced modalities as assigned.
Submit course syllabus or update department syllabus at least 10 days prior to the first day of class or within five days of contract execution.
Encourage active learning through discussion forums/topics, class assignments, group projects, etc.
Regularly check the University’s issued email account.
Timely grading of all course assessments
Responds to emails/messages within 24 hours.
Attend and attempt to resolve student issues complaints, as they arise, and on time.
Engages in the Institutional efforts in implementing and collecting Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) data.
Submit final grades for each Term by the deadline established by the Office of the Registrar.
Complete required departmental and institutional training.
Complete all required reports, including attendance, progress reports, Early Alerts, grade submissions, return surveys by the required deadlines.
Advise the Dean at the earliest possible moment when not able to teach a class.
Attend called meetings as requested by the Dean.
Complies with all University policies and guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong working knowledge with experience in the use of LMS;
Working knowledge of MSWord and MS Excel is required;
Know how to operate and troubleshoot standard office equipment that may include computers and associated peripherals;
Demonstrated ability to maintain electronic filing systems and records;
Demonstrated ability to provide a quality learning experience for all students;
Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
Qualifications and Desirable Characteristics
A doctorate or MFA degree (English preferred), with at least 20 graduate semester credit hours, from a regionally accredited institution, in English/Communication discipline is required.
Experience teaching non-traditional/adult learners online in a higher education setting is strongly preferred.
Official academic transcripts are required upon hire.
