Engineering Opportunities at Leeton Shire Council
Leeton Shire Council has several opportunities for civil, works and project engineers within the Roads & Drainage department.
A Little Bit about Leeton Shire – It Is the birthplace of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and is one of the most innovative inclusive and progressive places you will find in regional Australia.
With a population of around 11,480 Leeton is surrounded by the neighbouring Councils of Narrandera, Griffith and Murrumbidgee and is the second largest regional centre in the Western Riverina region, outside of Griffith. The Shire is 1,167 sq.km and includes the towns of Yanco and Whitton and the villages of Murrami and Wamoon.
The area’s agricultural prowess is complemented by a range of significant, wellknown food manufacturers, many with their head offices located in the Shire. Major food industry brands include Sunrice, Walnuts Australia, Southern Cotton, Berri Juice, Pacific Fresh, Milbrae Quarries, Malmet and JBS Riverina Beef, to name just a few.
The Gross Regional Product for 2016 in the Western Riverina is estimated at an impressive $26 billion. There is also cutting-edge research and development underway in the Shire at the Yanco Agricultural Institute (NSW Department of Primary Industries). Employing over 100 staff, the institute has investments of approx. $30 million in research currently underway from both the commercial sector as well as government. We are also an education centre, with six primary schools and three high schools, employing more than 450 staff.
The Shire is a 6-hour drive from Sydney, 5-hour drive from Melbourne, 4-hour drive from Canberra, a quick 40 minutes to Griffith and an 80-minute drive to Wagga Wagga. Easily accessible by road, air, bus and rail from regional centres and capital cities, with Regional Express Airlines (REX) operating daily return flights to Sydney from the Leeton-Narrandera Airport and Griffith Airport.
With major roads construction projects and developments being delivered throughout Leeton, we have engineering design and delivery roles that require experienced and enthusiastic individuals to see these projects through to completion.
We are currently seeking suitably qualified people interested in fulfilling the following roles (position descriptions attached):
- Survey & Design Engineer
- Development & Drainage Engineer
Please note that with the range of functions these roles cover there is potential to tailor a role to suit your skill set.
Council is seeking expressions of interest from persons who possess well-developed problem solving abilities and excellent interpersonal skills. They would ideally have a Degree in Civil Engineering and experience in Local Government would be a bonus. A high level of computer literacy in the use of a variety of software applications including MS Office Suite, AutoCAD, GIS (QGIS preferred), flood modelling software, web-based products and information management systems would be required.
Salary and Conditions: A salary of $73,918.00 – $91,863.20 pa plus 10% superannuation and applicable allowances will be offered (depending on qualifications and experience). The permanent positions are based on 35 hours per week with a monthly rostered day off.
Conditions of employment are in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award. Prior to commencement the successful applicant will be required to undergo Drug and Alcohol screening and a Fitness for Work Check. It is also a requirement to show evidence of having received current Covid-19 vaccinations.
