Pay Range

$123,960 – $166,992 Annually for the SES.2 level

$148,650 – $200,328 Annually for the SES.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have openings for Mechanical Engineers to support the High Explosives Enterprise Facilities within Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI). You will work with the Lead Mechanical Engineers to plan, manage, and execute projects in support of facility and programmatic work in HEAF, including firing tanks, laboratory areas, and the facility structure itself. You would also work in various capacity within the Site 300 organization. These positions are in the Facility Operations and Support (FOS) organization in the WCI Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will

• Contribute to the development of requirements, designs, project scope, costs, schedule, and risk plans to field and execute projects focused on facility maintenance, operations, and programmatic equipment for use in a high explosives facility.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of rigorous project management methods and tools to ensure successful execution of projects.
• Review, write, and develop technical specifications, drawings, and operating procedures.
• Oversee and provide technical solutions for facility capabilities.
• Work closely with scientific personnel and experimentalists to plan and safely conduct experiments by assessing shrapnel, fragment, and shock mitigation techniques and technologies to ensure facility and personnel protection.
• Review and approve the mechanical design of all new facility equipment and all mechanical design changes for existing facility and plant equipment.
• Ensure that new or modified mechanical facilities are installed and operating and ensure that all mechanical equipment, including Systems with Safety Functions, are properly maintained.
• Participate in formal and informal design reviews.
• Promote and support plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

• Provide technical expertise in mechanical design.
• Produce advanced conceptual and detail designs in support of on-going projects.
• Lead and/or provide guidance and technical direction to multidisciplinary project teams in a growing, dynamic environment.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of hardware design, fabrication, installation, and commission.
• Experience effectively managing projects and demonstrated ability to organize and conduct rigorous design and project reviews.
• Ability to devise solutions for complex technical requirements.
• Ability to manage (organize, direct, and monitor schedule and budgets) multiple projects concurrently and to reprioritize and change programmatic direction depending on emergent requests.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
• Advanced knowledge of computer operating systems and related software applications, such as: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook.
• Familiarity with the Design Review Process.
• Demonstrated ability/commitment to valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the workplace.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

• Advanced knowledge of mechanical design and analysis.
• Significant experience in managing, overseeing, and delivering multiple projects on
• budget and schedule
• Advanced communication skills with proven ability to present concepts and ideas in a clear and coherent manner, both verbal and written for presentation and interaction with other technical staff members.

Qualifications We Desire

• Previous hands-on experience with mechanical systems
• Experience with writing or reviewing procedures with an emphasis on personnel safety.
• Experience working in the nuclear weapons program and with Laboratory operations and business processes.
• Basic understanding of theory and application of explosives and the characteristics of explosive reactions.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
