Faculty Position in Media and Communications

(Effective on August 16 2023)

Position Summary

KIMEP University, College of Social Science, Department of Media and Communications (DMC), invites applications for one faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor.

KIMEP University offers its faculty members one-year contracts, renewable by mutual agreement. The starting date for this position is August 16.

Responsibilities include teaching, research, scholarly activities, advising, field liaison and service. DMC offers undergraduate and graduate programs with majors in Digital Journalism and Public Relations and Advertising. While we are inviting applications from all fields of media and communications, we have a particular teaching need for digital production, design and/or data storytelling in media and communications.

We are looking for a talented and innovative scholar who is actively engaged in research and enthusiastic about teaching bachelor’s and master’s students. In addition, we are looking for a productive and cooperative colleague who will bring new perspectives to the subject’s theory, research and practice.

Responsibilities involve teaching (face-to-face and online), research, scholarly activities, advising, field liaison and service. Faculty hired for this position will be able to teach in two programs Bachelor of Journalism (BIJ) and Master of International Journalism (MAIJ). In addition, the department offers professional and theoretical courses in Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising, Media Management, Data Journalism, Digital Storytelling, Social media Marketing etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Media or Communications or another relevant field from an internationally-recognized, accredited university. In addition, applicants for the position should have at least 3-5 years of teaching experience in reputable universities. Extensive professional experience in the field is recommendable. ABDs who meet the position qualifications will be considered and include in their application materials a letter from the dissertation chair confirming the defence date prior to the position’s start date.

Expertise is required in at least two fields: Media Management, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, New Media, or Communication Research. Familiarity with CIS countries or similar international experiences is welcome. Applicants must earn a doctorate in Media, Journalism, or Communications from an internationally-recognized, accredited university or equivalent professional qualifications. ABDs who meet the position qualifications will be considered and include in their application materials a letter from the dissertation chair confirming the defence date prior to the position start date. In addition, candidates must demonstrate a scholarship record, including published research in refereed journals and/or books.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with remote or online course design and teaching is strongly desired.

The College of Social Science

The College of Social Science has a faculty of 18 full-time and ten part-time faculty members and three dedicated administrative staff. The College includes the Media and Communications, Public Administration, International Relations, and Economics departments.

Compensation

Rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Compensation after-tax compares favourably with net salaries in western countries.

Limited on-campus housing is available to rent. In addition to salary, a benefits package includes primary healthcare, reduced tuition rates for KIMEP courses, subsidy for children’s school tuition and relocation allowance. New faculty members are provided with a reduced teaching schedule during the first semester. Summer paid teaching is typically available.

The salary will be subject to a deduction of taxes (10% Personal Income tax in general) as required by the Law of Kazakhstan.
