Job Title(s): Child Development Director

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

Location: Gladstone, NJ

Summary of Position:
We are a play based child development program which is focused on enriching the day to day lives of children from 6 weeks-5 years. The Childcare Development Director within our program will be responsible for caregiving, developmental observations, implementation of age appropriate/individually suited curriculum and facilitating a nurturing and supportive relationship with our community of parents.

Loving kids and a strong team mentality is a must for this position! This position will work directly for the Chief Operating Officer and will include training with The Curriculum Director. This role will work alongside the General Manager and include shared responsibilities between the two positions. There is some flexibility in the schedule but primarily we are looking for the candidate to work from 8-4pm or 9-5pm, M-F. The ability to be organized and manage people and teams is a key to success in this role.*

Minimum Job Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher degree (or higher degree in progress)
• 5-10+ Years experience as head teacher, assistant teacher or higher in a licensed childcare center/school
• Two + years of experience in a general administrative role or office management or experience in assistant director role or experience in a director role
• Successful completion of all State Required Health and Background screenings
• Working knowledge of personal computers with experience in the use of Word, Excel and Outlook and the Google Suite
• Ability to demonstrate flexibility on the job
• Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility
• Ability to communicate and work effectively within a team to achieve our goals

Preferred Job Qualifications:

• Prior experience in an assistant director or director role
• Successful completion of PRAXIS early childhood exam
• Master’s Degree in or related to Early Childhood Education and 5 years of experience in a classroom setting
• Bachelor’s Degree in or related to Early Childhood Education and 5-10+ years of experience working with children

Essential Job Functions:
The responsibilities of this position will include, but will not be limited to the following:

• Ensure the safety of children inside/outside the facility
• Scheduling staff and covering in classrooms as necessary to ensure all classrooms are always in ratio compliance
• Manage classroom budgets
• Establish partnerships with families that are respectful of individual differences, family styles and cultural/socio-economic diversity.
• Ensure that all meals and rest breaks for staff are done in a timely manner and are minimally disruptive to the children’s daily routines
• Follow all DHS regulations and center policies
• Maintain accurate notes on progress, lesson plans, and other required developmental screenings of each child using the tool provided
• Assist Head Teachers in planning for and discussing Parent/Teacher conferences after screening and whenever necessary
• Review and approve Head Teacher’s instructional plans that meet the needs of each child using the screening results, anecdotal observations, children’s individual interests and style of learning in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the collection’s curriculum objectives
• Observe Teachers and children on a regular basis and record observations
• Effectively lead and mentor Head Teachers and Assistant Teachers
• Order consumable supplies for daycare as needed and approve and order teacher classroom requests within budget
• Provide leadership, direction and mentorship to group teachers and childcare assistants, keeping staff up to date with day to day routines, organizational changes, strategic goals, special events, and professional development
• Deliver orientation and in service training sessions to teaching staff, ensure all required training is completed
• Bring teacher feedback on curriculum to Curriculum Coordinator
• Executing our curriculum that aligns with the Rhode Island Early Learning Development Standards
• Maintaining cleanliness in the classroom and ancillary spaces
• Communicating with families and supporting parents as their children develop
• Manage all room transitions with communication between parents and teachers as well as support to both before, during and after transitions take place.
• Filling out daily reports and other documentation
• Executing monthly staff meetings with the Administration team
• Creating a yearly professional development plan and annually completing 20 hours of professional development
• Filing and maintaining all Staff Paperwork
• Work collaboratively with the General Manager to supervise staff
• Organize and document monthly fire drills
• Assist in child care on an as needed basis, performing all necessary tasks
• Positively impact the lives of children and families every day
• Highlight and celebrate similarities and differences in children and families

• Communicate with children and families in a positive manner helping to bolster their confidence
• Treat each child with dignity and respect, helping bolster their confidence as they learn to navigate into their ever expanding world.
• Nurture children as they develop into responsible integral members of the group and community
• Be approachable and accessible in order for children to become actively engaged in problem solving in the environment
• Utilize developmentally appropriate guidance practices for all ages

Interactions with Parents

• Establish regular communication with parents regarding their child’s progress in the program or if specific issues arise
• Always remember that a parent’s day likely started well before they arrive at our doorstep, patience and grace are key ingredients to trusting relationships within our community
• Partner with parents to create an easy transition into the program
• Create an environment that embraces open communication with families
• Facilitate parent meetings and other parent involvement activities as needed.
• Provide Early Childhood/community resources as needed for the individual needs of each child

Interactions with Staff

• Ensure that your engagement with staff is conducive to a positive work environment and is in line with company’s values and standards
• Work together to build on company culture is critical to solid teamwork and a healthy/happy work environment
• Schedule and organize all all staff meetings
• Attend and provide in-service training and workshops
• Be courteous and respectful of peers
• Direct issues to the appropriate persons in a timely manner
• Supervise support staff
• Maintaining open lines of communication and supporting staff in any interstaff related challenges

Administrative Functions

• Review and track staff hours weekly and report hours for Payroll
• Complete all pertinent classroom paperwork (daily reports, attendance, staff-child ratios, etc.) in a timely manner.
• Assist in conducting tours of classrooms
• Assist in the education and supervision of fieldwork/internship students (if needed)

Physical Requirements

• Able to observe and respond to children’s needs, emergencies and/or conflicts that might occur during the day.
• Able to supervise children outside being out in the sun, snow and changing temperatures.
• Able to lift up to 40 pounds from the floor to waist high table.
• Able to push a cart/buggy/stroller weighing up to 100 pounds for up to 3 miles.
• Able to walk or run as the job dictates
• Able to kneel down to children eye level
• Able to sit on the floor to work with children
• Able to react to a child that is up to 30 feet away within 30 seconds
• Able to carry a child up to 40 pounds, up to 100 feet
• Extremely patient and able to deal effectively with the stress involved in working daily with children, staff and parents.
