Role:

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Engineer or Chemist to join the Synthetic Catalyst Activity Testing (SCAT) Department in our world-class Technology Centre in Royston. The key activity of the Department is running activity tests on laboratory-scale test rigs of a wide range of automotive catalysts to perform quality control functional testing to support global production facilities. Work is under the guidance of a Senior Engineer with a multi skilled team of Engineers and Technicians who provide expert emissions testing services, enabling the performance of Johnson Matthey’s automotive emissions control products to be accurately assessed. This is a fantastic opportunity to become a key member of a core engineering team, that helps enhance value for our customers and Johnson Matthey.

Key responsibilities:

• Supervise the process and quality of catalyst testing to support the quality control of production catalysts in order to comply with customer and legislative requirements, whilst ensuring that the requirements of Health and Safety regulations, departmental procedures and quality systems are considered at all times.
• Analyse data from catalyst testing and ensure high quality information is derived from the test.
• Develop your knowledge of state-of-the-art equipment, such as catalyst testing rigs and emissions analysers (eg. FTIR, mass spectrometry, In-line gas analysers) to provide support and guidance.
• Carry out modifications in equipment and processes locally and globally, which will allow the continual improvement in the work we do.

Are you the ideal candidate?

You will have:

• A mechanical, automotive, chemical engineering chemistry degree, or equivalent science qualification and professional experience.
• A good technical knowledge of relevant engineering/chemical concepts along with a good practical mechanical aptitude. All technical training will be provided.
• An analytical approach and the ability to interpret technical data are essential, along with basic technical report writing skills.
• No previous experience in catalytic testing is required, but you should demonstrate a keenness to learn about rigs and exhaust emissions analysis.
• Effective communication skills with the ability communicate with people of all levels.
• Excellent ability to prioritise your workload and ability to adapt to changing priorities with a positive and flexible attitude.
• Good IT skills particularly using Microsoft Office software package to enable validation of test data and identify and diagnose equipment faults. Experience with VBA and Macro writing will be beneficial.
