The Historian and Education Coordinator plays a key role in conducting archival research to provide interpretation, contextualization of historic records, and making thorough and thoughtful recommendations for 3 specific initiatives:

The Coordinator will also provide mentorship and guidance for research fellows (undergraduate and graduate students, some of whom will be working with the Museums & Society Program or the Special Collections Department). This individual should also be prepared to use research findings to advise and consult on Hopkins Retrospective exhibitions and interpretive signage projects, as well as be interested in developing creative ways to present content to audiences.
The position will report to the Hopkins Retrospective Program Manager. Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Present summaries of research findings in creative ways to a variety of audiences, including but not limited to the Hopkins Retro Program Manager, University leadership, students, faculty, staff, and the Baltimore community (materials could include reports, presentations, exhibits, web content)
Coordinate and facilitate research fellowships for students with a spirit of mentorship and fostering effective communication
Support the Hopkins Retro Program Manager and Processing and Research Archivist in identifying and pursuing areas of archival research related to the University’s founder, Johns Hopkins, and the Hopkins family, broadening our understanding of their relationship with the institution of slavery
Conduct historical research in support of the Name Review Board, the Diverse Names and Narratives Project, and Reexamining Hopkins History, providing relevant documentation, contextualization, and recommendations
Advise and support researchers both at and outside Johns Hopkins University who are also engaged in reexamining Hopkins history
Support the Processing and Research Archivist to help enhance the description of and access to university records
Collaborate with Digital Content and Events Outreach Coordinator and Hopkins Retro Program Manager on content for social media and website
Conceive and propose additional educational opportunities for students related to Reexamining Hopkins History, the Name Review Board, and the Diverse Names and Narratives Project
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Master’s Degree in Public History or a related field, or Ph.D. in History, Historical Studies or related fields
2-3 years professional experience in an archives library, in public history, community outreach, working as a historian, researcher, or educator
Demonstrated experience in using historical methodology
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Willingness to learn from and collaborate with archivists and curators
Interest in developing leadership skills as a mentor and facilitator for fellows, and being accessible for support of student research
Resolute commitment to unearthing and sharing Hopkins history in meaningful ways
Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through historical methodology, mentorship, and archival practice
Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility, particularly as it applies to time management skills and ability to meet multiple deadlines in an evolving environment
Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate and work effectively within and across organizational and community boundaries with a wide variety of users
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience researching, writing, editing, and preparing exhibitions (online and in person)
Successful record of engaging with diverse public audiences
Demonstrated experience managing or advising interns, volunteers, undergraduate or graduate students
Familiarity conducting research on people and topics of the 19th and 20th centuries, but must have a research skillset that can be applied to more contemporary historical figures
Demonstrated ability to support public and community programming
