We are the Navigation group in the Force Projection Sector at JHU/APL. We are seeking a Software Engineer to help us ensure the US Navy has the most accurate and reliable navigation systems in the world. In this role, you will use your skills in computer science and data analytics to develop software tools to evaluate high performance navigation sensors on US Navy platforms. You will work in collaborative teams to implement intuitive software to transform data into knowledge and, as a result, substantially increase the efficiency of APL’s state of the art navigation analyses for deployed platforms. You will join a dedicated group of physicists, software developers, mathematicians, and scientists who are committed to directly contributing to the success of strategic and tactical missions of utmost importance to the US Navy.

As a Software Engineer you will…
  • Develop, maintain and use analysis tools that implement mathematical models to assess navigation system performance, including inertial navigation systems, GPS systems, and acoustic-based navigation systems
  • Develop and maintain intuitive tools that visualize and analyze large quantities of navigation data to efficiently and reliably detect anomalies
  • Provide software development leadership as a resource for best practices for the development, testing and maintenance of sophisticated software packages

Qualifications


You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…
  • Possess a BS in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, data science, or a similar technical field
  • Have 3+ years of relevant experience developing software applications in languages such as Python or MATLAB
  • Have a practical background in mathematics, especially calculus, statistics, and/or linear algebra
  • Are experienced with software revision control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Are familiar with modern software industry best practices as they relate to: configuration management; testing; design and code reviews; documentation; and defect management/resolution
  • Have a strong sense of curiosity to understand how and why a system works and the ambition to follow up on that curiosity
  • Possess a willingness to work with domain specialists of navigation systems to understand the physical systems in order to better develop analysis tools
  • Enjoy solving challenging technical problems requiring both self-motivated independent investigation and collaborative team effort
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working on teams
  • Are willing and able to travel to US Navy facilities, bases, and contractor sites
  • Are able to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…
  • Have a MS or PhD in computer science, mathematics, data science, physics or a similar technical field
  • Have experience in Agile software development
  • Have experience implementing processes at the project or organization level to instantiate or enforce software best practices in the areas previously listed
  • Have experience or demonstrated background in Guidance, Navigation, and Controls (GNC) or with the practical application of estimation & control theory
  • Have experience or demonstrated background in computational mathematics
  • Have experience on medium to large scale software development projects
  • Have experience analyzing complex navigation systems, including Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), GPS, navigational sonars
  • Hold an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance
