Position Summary: The Finance Director will be a hands-on and participative manager who will lead and develop an internal team to successfully direct and manage the financial programs, to include budgeting, receipt of revenue, expenditure of funds, and conservation of assets. The Finance Director will work with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as the Folk School continues to enhance its quality programming and build long range sustainable plans. This is a full-time, exempt salary and benefits eligible position. This position will report to the Executive Director.
Organization: John C. Campbell Folk School (“the Folk School”) was founded in Brasstown, North Carolina in 1925, as an experiment in progressive education. As of 2021, the Folk School offers over 850 week and weekend classes for adults each year in craft, music, and dance. The Folk School also hosts a full calendar of events, including an annual Fall Festival and weekly concerts and dances. Listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, the 270-acre campus includes fifteen studios, fourteen student houses, a dining hall, a community house for student gatherings and events, and a History Center. The Craft Shop, a fine craft gallery, showcases a diverse selection of traditional and contemporary Appalachian craft. John C. Campbell Folk School operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with support from individuals, foundations, and other organizations.
Position Responsibilities: Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; and oversee all financial, project/program, donor, and grants accounting. Accurately post cash receipts/bank deposits, disbursements, payables, receivables, donations, and general ledger entries. In collaboration with budget mangers, track income and expenses for Olives Porch, grants, scholarships, capital, and restricted funds. Additional responsibilities will include a Capital Campaign projected to start in 2022. Oversee and maintain reports and financial data for investment accounts. Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Executive Director; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status. Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; develop the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual. Preparation and distribution of month end financial reports for Board and budget managers once closed out. Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Executive Director and board of directors. Coordinate and lead the annual audit process with external auditors. Coordinate and lead the annual Workers Comp audit process with external auditors. Oversee and lead year end closings: W-2s and 1099s and file reports with Federal & State agencies. Manage and lead organizational cash flow and forecasting. Research all areas of the company for ongoing cost reduction. Maintain banking and investment relationships. Manage all aspects of the insurance programs, incident management and claims reporting. Oversee payroll process. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Education and Experience Requirements: Minimum of a BA, an MBA/CPA or related degree preferred. Minimum of five years of financial and overall professional experience. Experience with final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination, preferred. Experience with grants and donor management. Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Possess skills or proficiency in QuickBooks and Excel.

Physical Demands The position requires that the employee be able to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, and have use of fine and gross motor skills. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls and to talk fluently. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy boxes up to 30 pounds. This position requires fluency in English.
