Technical Director:

Develop and maintain the technical quality of all design deliverables issued and that those deliverables meet Client expectations for accuracy, useability, schedule, and cost.

TDs are delegated the authority to approve or reject the issue of any design package and the freedom to act to assist projects/jobs under their purview to ensure quality and delivery and client expectations are met.

The TD actively supports winning work, developing industry/market networks, identifying and developing opportunities, and providing inputs to business planning. Market development and work winning activities are aligned to our market strategy(s).

The TD supports developing capability through proactive coaching, mentoring and guidance of younger engineers.

Noting the unique value proposition each TD brings to the business, TDs are expected to self-manage their value release to the business having consulted with relevant leadership roles within the business within an agreed KPI framework.

Key Accountabilities

Winning Work

• Provide input to the Business Planning process to drive business strategy including:
• Market areas
• New Technical areas and/or technology relevant to the business
• To promote MG’s technical capability to the outside world, e.g. taking part in technical presentations, publishing technical papers, networking in seminars and conferences.

Win work through:

• Using industry connections and networks to unlock opportunities and win work.
• Leading discussions with clients to establish requirements and scope and provide confidence we can deliver.
• Review RFPs and participate in Go/No Go and bid development to manage technical risk and approach.

Delivering Work

• The assigned TD is responsible for the quality of project deliverables and are required to assure that the quality and useability of relevant project deliverables and documents issued to the businesses Clients are of the highest standard and meet relevant certification requirements (ISO, RPEV, RPEQ etc.).
• Where a project needs the input of a TD it will be identified in the DMP.
• Input to resource planning and assignment of technical resources for projects, including personnel and relevant software/hardware.
• Coordination of reviews and assignment of personnel to reviewer roles for Design Management Plans

Developing Capability

• Lead the development of technical capability across the business, in line with and in support of the business strategy.
• Input to mentoring, training, and development of the technical team, including long term people planning and staff development
• The input to the appointment of people to roles on projects to enable the development of specific skills.
• Assisting staff to identify ways to progress their competency development
• Developing and encouraging effective practitioners, second-in-charges, and technical equals as part of succession planning
• Identify technical weaknesses in the team and work with Practice Area and Team Leads to manage (externally resource, fill internally etc)
• Identifying opportunities to make our technical skills apparent in the market. e.g. LinkedIn posts, industry presentations, conference papers etc.
