Position Summary:
The Education Coordinator for Virtual Learning’s duties involve the facilitation, coordination, scheduling, and daily management of the museum’s Virtual Visits programs; actively engaging visitors, including students, educators, and adults in discussion and dialogue in a virtual environment; and recruiting, overseeing, and coaching volunteers in conducting presentations and discussions online.
The Education Coordinator reports to the Manager of Youth and Teacher Programs to ensure the delivery of virtual learning experiences aligned with museum teaching practice. This position works in close collaboration with colleagues in the Education Unit and Volunteer Office. This position is responsible for working with the Marketing and Education departments to grow the museum’s Virtual Visit program and expand the program’s reach. This position requires familiarity with object-based teaching, including being responsible for building the institution’s capacity to fulfill JANM’s strategic priorities, the Education Unit Teaching Philosophy, and School Visit Learning Objectives. Anti-bias and anti-racist teaching must be promoted in the facilitation of active learning experiences that encourage independent critical thinking, making connections, and interacting with peers. Position is Full-Time for 40 hours a week and regularly scheduled for work on Monday–Friday.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide active facilitation of virtual visits for learners of all ages (grades 1–12, college, and adult) on a national and international level, encouraging dialogue and learner engagement, providing consistent messaging, and connecting museum content and themes to a virtual audience.
Work with the Manager of Youth and Teacher Programs to oversee virtual visit volunteers and apply training in content and pedagogy to ensure excellence in virtual experiences and consistency in delivery of museum messaging and teaching.
Work with the Manager of Youth and Teacher Programs to develop and deliver virtual educator professional development programs and support volunteers in their delivery of virtual presentations.
Work with Education Department to develop and build lessons to present museum content within virtual learning spaces for grades 1–12, college, and adult learners.
As part of the Education Unit, must also be able to provide on-site facilitation of visits for students grades 1–12, college, and adult learners.
Think strategically and make recommendations to strengthen JANM’s virtual education program through ongoing evaluation of virtual visits.
Work with the Marketing Department to execute a marketing plan for Virtual Visits to grow the program to conduct more virtual programs across a broader geographic area.
Schedule and oversee logistics such as technology needs and payment for virtual visits and ensure adequate educators and volunteers are available for visits. Correspond with educators, group tour leaders, and volunteers as necessary to coordinate virtual visits.
Maintain virtual tour schedule in Altru and Google Calendar.
Track data, including attendance figures and revenue generation, to inform budget recommendations and projections for the Virtual Visit Program.
Collaborate with the Education Unit to shape and execute education-based proposals and grants.
Work on the planning and execution of virtual educational partnership opportunities.
Flexible schedule Monday–Friday, occasional weekends and evenings as scheduled. Occasional early morning or late nights to accommodate varied time zones, within reason.
Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by JANM. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum-wide events per year:
JANM’s Benefit & Online Auction—(off-site) typically held in the Spring (April-May)
JANM’s Family Festival Day—Oshogatsu Festival (January)
JANM’s Family Festival Day—Natsumatsuri Festival (August)

Education
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Education, or Asian American Studies preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience/Knowledge
At least 1 year of experience in developing museum education programs, or the equivalent in related experience. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Knowledge of school district policies and procedures. Knowledge of object-based teaching and different learning styles. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Professional email and phone manner is essential. Ability to work in a team-environment, be a self-starter. Demonstrate commitment and flexibility at all times in order to ensure high quality service. Ability to adjust and provide appropriate action when unanticipated needs arise. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus.
Communication
Has excellent communication and negotiation skills. Must be able to provide courteous and effective service to co-workers, volunteers, and the general public. Is able to read, write, and comprehend routine reports and correspondence, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Is able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small and large group format.
Computer
Is Computer literate, Internet savvy, and experienced with MS Office, Google Calendar and Gmail preferred. Comfort with and strong knowledge of various video communication programs such as Zoom and Google Meet are essential. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Math
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning
Ability to act on own initiative, making consistently sound decisions. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Perform successfully when juggling and re-prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Is able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Reliable follow-through on assigned projects in a complete, well conceived, and timely manner.
