Your Impact:
This position provides Project Science support to the NASA Biological and Physical Sciences (BPS) Division of the Science Mission Directorate (SMD). The engineer will provide technical support and advocacy for multiple microgravity materials science research investigations slated for the International Space Station (ISS). Future science support of in-space manufacturing is also anticipated.

Qualifications:
The minimum qualification for this position is a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or similar. A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. Experience working in a laboratory environment preparing samples, conducting experiments, summarizing results, preparing s for internal and external use, writing abstracts for submission to national and international meetings, and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals is also required.
The desired qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. in Materials Science or Metallurgy with at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Essential Functions
Work Environment:
General office environment (50%) and metallurgical laboratories environment (50%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<5%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (15%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write s and perform engineering tasks (35%). Requires standing, sitting and walking environment with hazards that require wearing safety glasses, gloves and/or protective clothing to perform some operations (60%). Work will be performed at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (100%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%). Positions can require lifting and/or maneuvering materials and/or equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%). The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer owned vehicles for the purpose of moving materials in support of work activities. Requires ability to operate standard metallurgical analysis equipment such as cutting tools, metallurgical mounting equipment, grinding and polishing equipment, laboratory equipment, metallurgical optical microscopes and cameras, hardness testing equipment, metallurgical analysis instruments, laboratory data ing systems, etc. (50%). The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and automobile liability insurance, and successfully complete a company defensive driving training class.
Attendance:
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
