Job Summary

The Machine / Production Operator is responsible for all aspects of the operation of their assigned process(es) including start-up, shutdown, product change over, process problem troubleshooting, and meeting production quality requirements. Process units include twin screw compounding extruders, compaction and pulverizing equipment and auxiliaries such as solids transferring, feeding and mixing equipment. The operator must follow established procedures and rules for facilitating production. The operator must also facilitate all aspects of process development for new and existing products from feasibility testing to process automation in cooperation with the process engineering and production teams.

The position requires the ability to work 12 hour (Continental) rotating shifts including nightshift to support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year operation. There is a 2 weeks’ nights and 2 weeks’ days rotation. The trainee position is a minimum three-month probationary position at a rate of $22.80/hr. Once probation requirements are met, wages are increased to $24.20/hr with full benefits, including Health and Dental, Life Insurance, AD&D and LTD and after 6 months of service, enrollment options into our RRSP/DPSP program. We match contributions up to a maximum of 5% at a 1:1 ratio. We offer a 6% vacation rate which is approximately 3 weeks’ vacation salary and allow employees to begin using any accrued vacation after 6 months of employment. We also offer a progressive salary structure with opportunity to advance in levels and salary up to $29.43/hr. Promoting to further levels requires1-2 years between levels as well as demonstrated competence of the training requirements as found in the levels progression system.

Job Description

• Responsible for all aspects of the operation of their assigned process(es) including start-up, shutdown, product change over, process problem troubleshooting, and meeting production quality requirements.
• Process units including twin screw compounding extruders, compaction and pulverizing equipment and auxiliaries such as solids transferring, feeding and mixing equipment.
• Follow established procedures and rules for facilitating production.
• Facilitate all aspects of process development for new and existing products from feasibility testing to process automation in cooperation with the process engineering and production teams.
• Operate plastic processing equipment including extruders, grinders, packaging lines, mixers and various auxiliary equipment as well as drive a forklift throughout the shift.
• Perform quality testing in the laboratory of various samples from various plastics processing equipment and perform tests on raw and finished materials.
• Report findings to their supervisor and take appropriate action to segregate production that fails to meet specification.
• Perform other general labour and housekeeping duties.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stack 55 lb. bags on pallets at a rate of up to 80 per hour.
• Ability to move 50 kilogram drums.
• Ability to work in hot and occasionally dusty environment. (Respirator required in some areas of the facility – respirator requires tight seal around the face and therefore absence of facial hair).
• Have no restrictions that would limit ability to work with heavy or rotating equipment or operate forklift and floor sweeping vehicles.
• Ability to work in a non-smoking, drug and alcohol free facility.
• Stamina to work a 12-hour continental shift in a fast paced, environment, rotating 2 weeks’ days and 2 weeks’ nights.
• Ability to pass post-employment physical.

Qualifications

• Must possess a grade 12 education or equivalent.
• Forklift certification or have experience driving a forklift desired.
• 2-3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in a process industry.
• Experience in plastics production using twin screw extruders and knowledge of material handling systems is favourable.
• Experience in setting up, starting up and operating sophisticated equipment.
• Experience in troubleshooting and solve simple operating problems.
• Must be able to work as an individual and in a team environment.
• Ability to take direction and process information quickly.
• 2 positive references.
