As part of the College’s Learning and Teaching Strategy, we are looking to appoint two Senior Education Evaluation Officers within the Strategic Planning Division. Working with the Education Evaluation Manager, the two posts will support evaluation of the Learning and Teaching Strategy and contribute to data and policy work relating to students and education. For example, work related to the National Student Survey (NSS), Access and Participation Plans (APP) and the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). You will produce College performance measures focusing on participation and attainment gaps at College, Department, and programme level. You will also support the Education Evaluation Manager in the development of an evaluation strategy and in working with academic staff who are looking to conduct their own evaluations to advise them on the questions to address and the data available to them to use. These activities will support the College in improving access, success and progression of students from underrepresented groups and disadvantaged backgrounds.

The mission of the Strategic Planning Division is to understand and appreciate the academic mission of the College and to apply this within the context of expert knowledge of the external funding and policy environment. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in delivering this mission alongside the evaluation of the Learning and Teaching Strategy.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be working with the Education Evaluation Manager on the following:

• To design and maintain reports and dashboards to provide College, Faculty, Department and programme level data on key education performance measures;
• To provide robust analysis of internal and external data using appropriate methods and make this available to relevant audiences within the College;
• To contribute to the strategy for education evaluation, identifying the key questions which evaluation should address and the methods and data for addressing them;
• To work with academics who are seeking access to and permissions for student data for use in evaluation;
• To provide a service to academic staff to enable them to understand the questions which their own evaluations should seek to address;
• To support the development and monitoring of the College’s Access and Participation Plan (APP) and undergraduate students’ financial support package;
• To support the Education Evaluation Manager in their role as secretary to the Working Group which oversees College policy in the area of access and participation;
• To prepare, in collaboration with the Education Evaluation Manager and the Associate Director and Director of Strategic Planning, College TEF submissions;
• To have an expert understanding of the operational details of the TEF, including the metrics;
• To analyse the NSS outcomes, prepare dashboards and disseminate findings;
• To prepare briefings and analyses as required on the APP and TEF, and related topics;
• To develop proposals and communicate these effectively, both in writing and orally.

Essential requirements

To do this successfully, you will:

• Have a good honours degree or equivalent in a subject requiring numeracy
• Have experience analysing complex datasets and summarising the emerging themes succinctly, including in written documents
• Demonstrate knowledge of the principal data sources used in a Higher Education setting, particularly those which relate to the student lifecycle
• Be highly numerate, with the proven ability to understand, analyse, interpret and explain complicated information and data
• Have a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in both written and analytical work.
• Have a high degree of computer competency, including a detailed understanding and demonstrated experience in the use of databases, spreadsheets and reporting tools
• Have excellent and clear written and oral communication skills with demonstration of diplomacy and ability to tailor to different audiences
• Have good interpersonal and negotiation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels
• Have strong organisation skills including the ability to prioritise own workload to meet deadlines, and to work on own initiative
• Be able to demonstrate a knowledge of, and an interest in, the higher education sector and the key issues it faces
• Have self-motivation and enthusiasm, with the ability to think laterally
• Have imagination to apply skills and knowledge in new contexts and to think beyond traditional solutions

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023. Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.
