Imperial College London Hiring for Research & Finance Officer Job at South Kensington, England Full Time

The Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks a Research & Finance Officer to join our central administrative team. Working with the Research & Finance Manager, Department Resources Manager and Department Operations Manager, this post sits within the core administrative team of the Department providing key support to our staff and students, enabling world-leading research and teaching.

Responsible for ensuring that financial aspects of the department are well-managed, this position will offer essential support to our academic community and will act as an initial escalation point for complex finance-related queries. The postholder will assist in the direction of work of two Administrative Assistants, who provide front facing financial and personnel support to the department community.

The Research & Finance team is an integral part of the Departments structure; enabling astounding research undertaken by our Academic and Research community. Through the effective administration of Department finances and post-award management, we strive to enhance the impact of our research whilst building a supportive and collaborative environment.

The Department has over 50 Academic staff, around 100 Researchers and around 600 students (including 180 postgraduate research students). Our Academic research community is split across three main divisions, with research areas ranging from Additive Manufacturing in Medical Engineering to Turbocharger testing and Tribology. The Department is based in the City and Guilds Building on the South Kensington campus.

Duties and responsibilities

Research

• You will be responsible for monitoring project expenditure, ensuring grant budgets are utilised responsibly and appropriately, and supporting audit processes in collaboration with the Faculty Research Services team.
• You will support the management of Departmental Studentships, including bursary and tuition fee payments.
• You may be asked to support the Research & Finance Manager with input into Research-based review processes (e.g. REF)

General Finance

• You will direct the work of junior administrators in relation to finance requirements of the department, along with developing and delivering training to the wider finance-based staff in the department.
• You will act as an approver for Department expenditure processes, and responsible for compliance with College expenses/procurement policies.
• You will participate in annual forecasting and planning rounds, liaising with contracts and suppliers and monitoring the financial queries coming through from the wider department.
• You will be involved in providing administrative support to Casual pay processes and consultancy agreements.

Essential requirements

• You should have a degree level qualification or equivalent. A certified qualification in accounting would be useful, but is not essential.
• You must have experience working in an finance administration role, preferably within an Academic environment. This experience must have include procurement and customer facing roles.
• Knowledge of budget reviews/management and financial systems (e.g. Oracle) is a requirement.
• An understanding of the UK research funding environment would be useful.
