Role and Responsibilities

ideas42’s Director of Finance & Accounting will be a member of the senior management team and will be responsible for all finance and accounting functions at ideas42, including accounting, financial planning and forecasting, and investments. The Director will be an experienced non-profit financial leader who loves numbers and accounting, is a talented systems thinker, and a terrific teacher and interpersonal communicator who can help others in the organization adopt new ways of working. Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will be responsible for defining and executing the organization’s financial systems priorities, identifying and implementing improvements to processes and procedures, managing the organization’s financial health, and you will take a proactive and solutions-oriented approach in doing so. You will make sure we’re running a tight ship that is efficient and mitigates risk, protecting the organization’s financial assets while leaving sufficient flexibility for continued innovation.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Play a key leadership role as a member of the senior management team, with responsibility for all financial matters, including accounting, budgeting, grants management, financial planning and analysis, auditing, treasury, process improvements and more
• Strengthen financial management
• Lead annual planning & budgeting processes across 8 key focus areas
• Oversee grant reporting including federal funding
• Build the systems and processes necessary for success including cash flow, monthly close & financials, contract & grants management, and others as appropriate
• Facilitate the annual audit & tax compliance including timely completion of the 990 tax filing
• Annual review of fringe and indirect rates utilizing industry best practices

• Strengthen financial reporting and analytics to facilitate strategic business decisions
• Maintains the accounting system and produces a timely and accurate picture of the financial health of the organization
• Prepares monthly forecast analysis and oversees reporting for the organization as a whole as well as the different focus areas
• Interpret information so that leadership can make good strategic decisions for the organization and all key staff has the information they need to make real-time decisions in a financially responsible manner

• Manage the financial relationship between ideas42 and other entities, including international subsidiaries and for-profit subsidiaries, as well as re-granting partners
• Make sure all our routine procedures are accurate and working smoothly, including payroll, benefits, tracking leave, employment records, monthly close and other internal systems.
• Streamline processes and create efficiencies within the accounting department including grant management, AR, AP, and payroll.

• Partner with the Director of Operations in leading risk management for the organization, including internal controls, reporting, compliance, insurance, and business registrations
• Lead, guide, coach and mentor direct reports in financial processes and reporting. Ensure the success of the team and their performance with an eye toward internal controls and continuous improvements

Minimum qualifications:

• The ideal candidate has a minimum of 10 years of experience in nonprofit finance, including final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area, thrives in nonprofit settings, thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as they relate to nonprofits, continuously looks for improvement of processes and enjoys managing a small team of new professionals.
• A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
• A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to communicate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds
• Minimum of a BA
• Advanced Excel skills required
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission
• Able and willing to travel infrequently (typically less than 5% time).
• Commitment to promoting social good

Preferred qualifications:

• MBA or related degree
• CPA
• Familiarity with Sage Intacct desirable; Salesforce experience a bonus
• Highly organized, with the ability to work efficiently and effectively
• Ability to build consensus around internal initiatives
• Self-starter able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Passion for understanding human behavior and pursuing innovation

• Compensation: $135,000-$160,000 a year
