Full-Time Head for Computing Department

Reporting to: The Vice-Principal (Academic)

Accessible to: The Vice-Principal (External) and the Managing Director

Introduction:

Founded in 2003, ICON College of Technology and Management is a private higher education institution adjacent to the City of London and has more than 1,500 students including in BSc/BA (Hons) Top-Up courses. The College recently signed a partnership agreement with Falmouth University for a period of five years to deliver validated approved BSc/BA Hons courses. The College is also planning to deliver a Falmouth University validated MBA degree course to start next year.

The College seeks to appoint a full time Head of the Business and Management Department with the ability to manage a fast-growing department with full-time and part-time academic staff.

Job description:

The Head of the Computing Department academically leads the department and its courses (Pearson HND and Partner University validated courses) and reports to the Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs).

Main responsibilities include:

• Have overall responsibility for all teaching and learning within the department
• Represent the interests of the department within the wider management of the College, and participate in any collaborative arrangements with other Colleges which may benefit the development of the department

• Work within the College’s professional development programme to ensure that s/he and the members of the department keep their knowledge and expertise up to-date

• Keep abreast of national strategy and developments impacting on the subject area(s) and ensure information is communicated to the department and whole College staff, and the department is responsive to such developments

• Convening and chairing the Assessment Boards of each programme that makes up the Department of Computing; liaising with the External Examiner(s) and overseeing the arrangements of all materials sent External Examiners and their responses to the College’s external partners.

• Reviewing the curriculum, identifying ways in which it can be developed to meet external needs and markets and advising senior management on staffing resourcing and training/staff development requirements.

• taking a reasonable number of teaching sessions;

• participating in the preparation of external bodies’ visits and dealing with first stage of the complaint procedure with relevant complaints from students

• Monitoring teaching methods and the quality of lectures as per the programme syllabuses and schemes of work and any required uploading onto the VLE.

• Preparing and timely distributing assignment briefs on the ICON College VLE.

• Ensuring tutors are motivating students and preparing appropriate and varied student assignments.

• Being prepared to innovate and utilise all resources in the delivery of programmes, ensuring the quality of the student experience.

• Line-managing, through a scheme of delegation all academics within the Department.

• Working with other senior colleagues, undertake mid-term and annual Staff Performance Reviews and organize subsequent staff development programmes.

• Undertaking such other duties as assigned by, and agreed with, the Principal/Vice Principal (Academic) from time to time and liaising with the Vice Principal (External Affairs).

The above responsibilities are subject to change at the discretion of the Vice Principal (Academic) and Principal as they may include other responsibilities from time to time.

Additional responsibilities and involvement will include:

Membership of the Management Board and Academic Board, together with membership of such other groups and/or committees as shall be required/deemed appropriate from time to time.

Person Specification

Essential requirements:

• A substantial experience of working as a Senior Lecturer or Programme Manager at a higher or further education institution in the UK
• A doctoral-level qualification in Computing and/or related areas
• Expertise in delivering undergraduate/postgraduate courses in Computing
• Availability of working on some Saturdays and some evenings up to 7.30 pm
• Availability of working on the College premise for most of the working week
• Knowledge of the policy context of quality management in higher education and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for a range of internal and external audiences
• Good interpersonal skills, a team player, and a flexible approach to working patterns
• Applicants must have the right to work in the UK (the College is unable to provide work permits)

Desirable requirements:

• Familiarity with the independent higher education sector in the UK.

Benefits:

The College will offer a competitive salary in the range of up to £55,000 – £60,000, depending on qualifications and prior experience. In addition, there will be 33 days holiday (including 8 bank holidays) per annum. During Christmas time, staff can either take three days holiday or have tasks assigned by their line manager. A range of work-life balance opportunities and family-friendly negotiated working arrangements are available. A 5-8% private pension contribution may also be made by the College.
