I CAN is the UK’s leading children’s communication charity. We run two special schools, design and deliver interventions and train practitioners to work with children and young people, run a helpline and raise awareness of the impact poor speech, language and communication can have on a child’s life chances. You can read more about us in the recruitment information pack provided below.
About the role
We are looking for an experienced human resources practitioner to join a small HR team providing generalist support throughout the employee life cycle in an organisation with 200-220 staff in three main locations. As the HR Officer, you will provide:
Day-to-day HR administration for the organisation, personal records and ensuring the right people have the right paperwork and information at the right time in line with our data protection policy and employee privacy notice.
Payroll transactions with our outsourced payroll provider.
Recruitment support, from ‘request to recruit’ through to offer, onboarding and induction.
Administration and development of our online learning portal known as the I CAN Learning Academy.
Management of processes across all stages of an employee cycle, including leaver and joiner processes, management of staff benefits, contracts of employment, and learning and development needs.
Co-ordination of HR workflows and processes to ensure tasks are followed through and the HR system is updated, as necessary.
All other HR processes where needed, including auditing and reporting, e.g., regular management information.
Employment policy and process development.
Essentially you will be proactive with great attention to detail, commitment to best HR practice, strong communication skills, an appreciation of the need for confidentiality and an ability to maintain a people-centric approach to processes.
In return we offer you an inclusive and supportive environment, the tools to work from the office and from home, access to our employee benefits programme, a range of employee wellbeing interventions and an investment in your personal development.
Skills and experience needed:
We are seeking an individual with some experience in HR. Your covering letter should focus on the following attributes and experiences we are looking for:
Evidence of a CIPD qualification and/or qualification through experience. Either is fine.
Experience in managing HR transactions such as absences, pay, recruitment and learning and development.
Experience in managing payroll and dealing with either an internal or external payroll provider.
Experience in and an understanding of developing contracts of employment and contractual variations.
Experience in running reports and/or developing management information, such as sickness absence, workforce diversity, recruitment and staff in post.
Experience in building successful relationships outside of the HR function.
How to apply:
If interested, read our recruitment information pack, which you can read and download below. Please send an up-to-date CV, along with a covering letter of no more than two pages of A4 signifying why you are interested in the role and providing evidence of your attributes and experiences against the five areas outlined above which will form our basis for shortlisting and send your application by 9am on Wednesday, 12th January 2022.
I CAN works within the government’s Covid-19 guidelines.
Please note that we will not close applications before this time and date as we recognise that candidates put in a lot of time and effort into making an application and we want to give each of you the time and space to put in an application you feel proud of.
Please note that we will not shortlist candidates who do not submit both a CV and a supporting statement.
We serve children and young people from all backgrounds and strive to represent the same diversity in our workforce. We strongly believe there is unity in diversity and are committed to create an inclusive working environment for all. We are under-represented by people who are from ethnic minority backgrounds and those who identify as being from the LGBTQ+ community. We particularly welcome applications from all suitably qualified people from these backgrounds. If you are excited about making an impact in children’s lives, we would love to hear from you.
Due to the volume of applications we receive, unfortunately, we are not always able to respond to every applicant. If you have not received a response within one week after the closing date, you have not been successful on this occasion.
We are committed to safer recruitment practices and to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
