POSITION DESCRIPTION

Plant Engineer

SCOPE OF POSITION

Reporting into the Manufacturing Manager, the Plant Engineer is responsible for overall plant facilities, maintenance, equipment repair, modification and installation and all capital projects. Gives input to and is accountable for maintenance and capital budgets and cost controls. Responsible for adherence to safety in the Maintenance Department.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBLITIES

Maintenance/Plant Engineering

• Manage day-to-day Maintenance Millwright Group.
• Provide technical support/troubleshooting advice to Maintenance / Production personnel.
• Review Preventative Maintenance program, determines where changes or improvements are necessary and makes recommendations regarding changes and implements.
• Source equipment/parts and suppliers to obtain quotes.
• Liaise with Production Department to co-ordinate scheduling of downtime for equipment repairs or modifications.
• Participates in monthly safety committee meetings.
• Review Maintenance Department performance by checking machinery downtimes.
• Monitors and approves purchases for the Maintenance Department
• Track monthly Maintenance R&M costs by machine with the aim to control spending.
• Keep abreast of new technologies and methodologies relevant to the performance of the maintenance department.
• Manage process improvement projects within his/her scope including the ongoing development and training of required methods and procedures
• Manage facilities – plumbing, HVAC, Mechanical, security, safety
• Ensuring all projects adhere to both provincial and federal applicable codes.
• Understand and follow food safety and quality procedures.
• Provide oversight and guidance during equipment install / non routine maintenance / equipment upgrades

Projects

• Prepare documentation and assists in preparation of justifications for modification of equipment and for the purchase of new equipment.
• Prepares and analyses bids for major contractors and makes recommendation for selection.
• Assists in sourcing equipment suppliers and brokers for available machinery.
• Prepares drawings, plans and designs for approval.
• Plans, organizes and co-ordinates execution of all project work.
• Liaises with government and regulatory bodies i.e. Alberta Environment and ensures all new installations or modifications meet the applicable regulations.
• Provides input to capital expense budget forecasts.
• Control capital project costs within budgeted limits.
• Designs equipment modifications and makes recommendations to resolve work method problems.

Managerial Responsibilities

• Supervises, conducts performance appraisals on and directs the activity of the Maintenance Millwright Department employees through the Maintenance Foremen.
• Participates in disciplinary measures in the maintenance Millwright group.
• Manages contractors when required.
• Ensures supervised employees are following food safety and safety rules.

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

• Frequent and regular contact with production personnel – Managers, Supervisors, Engineers to review problems, makes recommendations and schedule downtime.
• Regular contact with Systems and Accounting personnel.
• Occasional contact with government regulatory agencies, Occupational Health authorities, Fire Department and Insurance Brokers.
• Frequent contact with suppliers, contractors and equipment brokers or manufacturers regarding new equipment, quotes, bids and specifications.
• Regular contact with service contractors to schedule work and review contractor proposals.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Engineering Degree or equivalent trade experience
• Minimum Experience: 3-5 years related experience in a similar role
• P.Eng. or P.L. Certification in Alberta

Skills

• Skilled in receive and settle transactions; preparing reports and recommendations – written communication required.
• Skilled in making presentations to management. Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
• Knowledge in for statistical methods, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and other Lean Manufacturing tools
• Good people management skills
• Project Management skills
• Strong understanding of various trades
• Ability to use AutoCAD and create drawings, computer literate

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: From $90,000.00 per year
