About The Role
Hippo Digital is recruiting Intermediate Java Developers to join our Hippo Herd. Java Developers work in multi-disciplinary teams that build, support & maintain User-Centred digital solutions that offer real value and work for everyone.
Hippo’s Intermediate Java Developers are developing experts in their field. You will act as an Intermediate Consultant providing technical expertise in software engineering practices both internally and to our clients. You will manage and support projects, maintain client relationships and be passionate about your continuous professional development.
Your role in nutshell:

• Produce software for Hippo and our clients – front-end, back-end, platform, we do it all, but you don’t need to be an expert in it all
• Create web applications used by public and staff – this includes researching with members of the public to understand their needs
• Work within an agile, collaborative, multidisciplinary team
• Prototype new functionality within a cloud native environment
• Utilise the latest standards and approaches to solving problems
• Build great relationships with your team and stakeholders
• Work with the Hippo community to share best practice to ensure high standards

Skills and experience that you need

• Experience of the full development lifecycle delivering user-centred digital solutions following OOP and SOLID principles
• Proven development skills using core Java technologies i.e. J2EE, CXF, Spring Boot, JSP, Struts, Hibernate
• Front-end development skills – HTML, CSS, JavaScript (Angular, NodeJS, React)
• Unit Testing
• Experience of developing following agile methods and techniques such as Kanban and TDD
• Experience of public cloud (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud) and DevOps
• Experience/exposure of Docker containerisation
• Capable of using a variety of software tools such as Terraform, Vault and Ansible
• CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, AWS CodeBuild, Azure DevOps and Atlassian
• A team player with strong collaborative skills
• Excellent verbal/written communication skills
• Previous experience of working on GOV/NHS projects would be highly desirable
