The Department of Midwifery sits within the Faculty of Health & Environmental Sciences and is the largest midwifery educator, researcher, and postgraduate provider in New Zealand and known for strong research output with real-world impact, close engagement with midwifery leaders, practitioners, and accredited programmes through the Midwifery Council.
The Opportunity
We are seeking expressions of interest for a senior academic leadership role within the Department of Midwifery. The role involves providing direction and leadership to support the ongoing development of the Department, ensuring alignment with AUT’s strategic and operational priorities while maintaining a strong focus on excellence and equity in teaching, research, and service.
The successful candidate will contribute innovative and strategic thinking to further develop the Department and enhance its academic reputation. A key aspect of the role is leading and supporting a positive departmental culture that prioritises high-quality teaching, impactful research, strong service contributions, and staff wellbeing. The role also involves ongoing curriculum development. Leadership responsibilities include mentoring and developing academic and professional staff to achieve departmental goals and support a high-performing, collaborative environment.
About you
Applicants should be experienced senior academic leaders within health or a related discipline, with demonstrated capability in staff leadership and academic management. You will be recognised as an inclusive, culturally capable leader who actively supports diversity, equity, and collaboration. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, including the ability to listen, communicate effectively, and influence across diverse groups.

Qualification:
Master’s or PhD (or in progress) in Health or related field; registration with the relevant NZ professional board; current Annual Practising Certificate preferred.
Teaching & Learning:
Extensive undergraduate/postgraduate teaching experience, including course design, delivery, and coordination; ability to develop innovative curriculum and integrate emerging technologies; experience supervising and supporting postgraduate students to completion.
Research & Scholarship:
Proven track record of research leadership and publications; experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships across academia, industry, and professional bodies.
Citizenship & Service:
Demonstrated academic leadership and service; experience engaging external stakeholders (community, industry, government, and professional bodies) to share research and create opportunities.
