Your new company The Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) provides a national, multi-institutional capability to undertake systematic and sustained observing of the marine environment. All observations undertaken by IMOS produce data streams that are freely accessible via the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN). The AODN has developed a single integrative framework for marine data and information management, discovery, and access. This infrastructure employs open-source principles and is standards-based to deliver information infrastructure for IMOS and the broader marine science community.

Due to experiencing significant growth, IMOS/AODN are looking for several talented individuals to join their team of passionate and multidisciplinary experts. This is a fantastic opportunity to join this unique organisation delivering world leading marine data output and applications!

Your new role

Based in Hobart, Tasmania, this role will see you joining a close-knit team of 8 developers. You will be assisting in the ongoing development and implementation of the information infrastructure underpinning IMOS and the AODN. You will provide expertise in system design and administration to support the development of new data-driven systems and the maintenance and improvement of existing systems. In this role you will;

• Build and support the geospatial and web-based scientific software and information infrastructure hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) that underpins the AODN.
• Working with other members of the AODN team on system design, delivery and maintenance in addition to protocols and standards for data and metadata ingestion, processing and distribution.
• Design and implement new web-based data management systems – including associated design (software and database), implementation, release planning and data migration activities.
• Work closely with internal (IMOS/AODN) and external stakeholders (domain experts) to perform systems analysis tasks – requirements gathering, user interface and system design.

What you’ll need to succeed

• Tertiary qualification in Information Technology (or similar) with relevant experience or equivalent extensive experience in Software Development.
• Significant experience developing and maintaining REST API’s and database persistence mechanisms using Java (preferably using Spring) and/or Python.
• Experience in data management including database design, administration, troubleshooting technical issues and performance tuning, preferably using PostgreSQL and PostGIS.
• Great knowledge and experience designing and implementing cloud-native architecture solutions for the ingestion and delivery of heterogeneous scientific data.
• Detail oriented team player with well-developed written and verbal communication
