Qualifications:
· Registered Nurse (RGN)
· Mentorship in practice (ENB 998 or equivalent)
· Leadership/management qualification
· Qualification in Care of the Elderly or equivalent is desirable
Experience:
· 4 – 6 years experience at a Senior Nurse/Sister level (G Grade/Agenda for Change band 7)
· Ability to demonstrate leadership skills
· Proven experience in ‘change management’
· Knowledge of the Commission for social Care Inspection (CSCI) and the National Care Standards (2000)
· Experience in palliative care would be of an advantage
Job Summary:
To work closely with the Registered Manager and deputising in his/her absence, to ensure the smooth operation of the Nursing Home.
To act as a clinical and professional leader in the delivery of resident care.
The post holder must facilitate and empower staff to develop modern, responsive and effective professional services within the Nursing Home.
To be accountable for improving the working environment and improving residents’ health and well-being.
To be accountable for effective management of teams and resources to maintain high standards of evidenced-based nursing care and the clinical environment of the Nursing Home.
The post holder will be required to carry out all relevant forms of care and will work in partnership with other heads of departments and staff to promote high standards and uphold the good name of the Nursing Home.
Leadership and Management:
1. To manage the day-to-day provision of nursing care to the designated unit and other clinical areas within the Nursing Home.
2. Take lead for the development of the clinical team.
3. Lead on implementation of care initiatives (CQC, National Service Frameworks, and other Government Frameworks).
4. To assist in the coordination and monitoring of staff performance using the appraisal system.
5. Actively participate in budget activity and resource management.
6. Act as the designated ‘Nurse in Charge’ in the absence of the Registered Manager, acting as an operational manager for the Nursing Home.
7. Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff.
8. Actively participate/lead regular staff meetings, and attend resident and relatives forums.
9. Attend external meetings in the absence of the Registered Manager.
10. Assist in the investigation of clinical risks and complaints, seeking to instigate recommended actions to prevent the occurrence, in accordance with the Nursing Homes’ policies and procedures.
11. Actively participate in the recruitment of staff in partnership with the Registered Manager.
12. Promote good communication between all teams and ensure that Nursing Home policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.
13. To act as a resource, and be accountable for the correct procedures for the ordering, storage, dispensing, and disposing of medication as set out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and the Nursing Homes Policies and procedures.
14. To be aware of the Health and Safety At Work Act (1974).
15. To participate in clinical supervision program as set out in the policies and procedures of the Nursing Home.
16. Be aware of, and at all times adhere to C.O.S.H.H regulations and ensure that these are implemented throughout the Nursing Home.
17. Assist the Registered Manager in exercising Nursing Home policies relating to Human Resources (HR) issues,
Clinical Responsibility:
1. To practice as a professional nurse, acting with confidence, authority and experience.
2. To plan and deliver care to residents and evaluate outcomes, and enable team members to follow by example. Including;
· Implementation of government and other care initiatives
· Day-to-day nursing management of illness, condition or disease
· Promotion of health and prevention of illness/harm
· Clinical assessments of residents with urgent medical needs
3. To act as the residents advocate, ensuring a safe and caring environment – both physical and psychological,
4. Develop the nursing teams to make appropriate referrals to, and develop plans of care with, the wider multi-disciplinary team.
5. Lead and develop the nursing team in conducing appropriate risk assessments.
6. Comply with the NMC codes of professional conduct.
7. Empower the clinical team to implement evidence–based care.
Financial Responsibility:
1. Lead on identifying and selecting clinical equipment in line with Nursing Home policies.
2. To be accountable for rationalizing stores and supplies to ensure more effective use of physical and financial resources within the clinical setting.
3. Assist the Registered Manager in maintaining budget control.
4. Oversee off duty rotas, to ensure appropriate skill mix and staffing levels.
Service Development and Improvement:
1. Assist the Registered Manager in identifying and developing clinical policies and services within the Nursing Home.
2. Act as an effective ‘change agent, implementing national and local initiatives, fostering a ‘can do’ philosophy.
3. Ensure all staff complies with the policies and procedures of the Nursing Home.
4. Lead clinical staff/teams in sharing good practice across the clinical environment.
Responsibility for Dealing With Difficult Situations:
1. Act as operational management throughout the Nursing Home, including the investigating and recording of complaints and incidents.
2. Act as an effective two-way channel of communication between service users, visitors, the public, and staff.
3. Manage effectively residents, visitors, or public whose behavior is challenging/abusive or causing distress to others and support the Nursing Home team in managing challenging situations.
4. Ensure that all staff document complaints and problems as they arise, so that an accurate record of events and action is available for investigation or follow up.
5. Ensure all complaints, problems and incidents are reported to the Registered Manager or Directors in his/her absence.
Physical Working Environment:
1. To work within Hayes Cottage Nursing Home
2. To attend relevant meetings and training which may involve travels within the local area or further afield.
3. Frequent exposure to body fluids and hazards.
Knowledge, Training and Education:
1. To participate in creating an environment conductive to learning and development for all staff within the Nursing Home.
2. To pursue the role of mentor/preceptor to clinical staff.
3. To maintain own personal and professional development as set out by the NMC.
4. Work closely with the Clinical Facilitator to ensure mandatory training needs of clinical staff are monitored and updated.
5. Liase with the Clinical Facilitator the appropriateness of external training applications and present to the Registered Manager for approval.
6. Participate in the staff appraisal and clinical supervision process.
Additional Information:
In addition to the key areas listed, the post holder may be requested to perform other duties to facilitate the smooth running of the Nursing Home.
IT skills may need to be adopted to enhance resident care and modernise standards within the Nursing Home.
The most challenging part of the job will be to assist the Registered Manager to develop a modern health care service at Hayes Cottage Nursing Home, focussed on high standards and improved resident care.
All duties must be carried out in accordance with the Nursing Home’s policies and procedures.
