Humane Education Specialist – Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation

Regular Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Location: Wailuku, Maui, HI

SUMMARY

The Humane Education Specialist oversees all functions of the Education Program. Responsible for promoting humane interactions between pets and people. Designs, coordinates, implements and oversees all Education Department activities related to teaching and promoting humane attitudes towards animals including animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, animal rights, and animal behavior. Recruiting volunteers and providing ongoing support, managing Education Program data. Assists with grant writing to enhance program support ensuring goals and financial responsibilities of Education Program are met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration:

• Develops and monitors departmental expense and revenue budget to ensure positive net revenue to support other organization programs.
• Responsible for accurate and up-to-date website, social media, newsletter and other marketing content.
• Adheres to the department’s financial goals.
• Attends managerial and board meetings as needed.
• Attends professional association meetings as needed.
• Responsible for coordinating use and maintenance of education facilities.

Education:

• Develops and implements curriculums for audiences of varying ages and backgrounds.
• Seeks alternative, non-regular free or fee-based education or other programming (could be a speaker, book signing, corporate meetings/retreats).
• Coordinates and oversees the education programs and educational community events.
• Coordinates and oversees promotional tours, conferences, and other associated activities.
• Oversees and develops partnership programs (schools, pet clubs, etc.).
• Develops brochures and educational materials.
• Stays current with progressive teaching methodology and advancement and child development. Pursues continuing education related to humane topics and maintains a strong network of professional humane educators.
• Works with animals of varying size and temperament, handling individual animals in a caring and respectful manner.
• Manages the Education Department’s social media presence.
• Ensures that educational programs are culturally sensitive and applicable to the needs of the community. Addresses sensitive issues within the education setting with highest degree of discretion, judgement, empathy and professionalism.
• Adheres to the shelter disease management and safety precautions on an ongoing basis.
• Responsible for teaching members of the public how to interact with animals in a compassionate and considerate way.
• Reports issues needing immediate attention to the CEO.
• Provide support and information to other departments, as needed.
• May be required to work, nights, weekends, holidays or during emergencies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Directly trains, leads, motivates, assigns and supervises Education personnel and volunteers in performing daily duties in accordance with the Education department policies, on campus and at offsite events.
• Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable laws, including but not limited to, hiring, terminations, performing periodic evaluations and annual evaluations, counseling, disciplinary action on an ongoing basis with Education personnel and volunteers as needed.
• Assures that employees and volunteers assigned to the Education department are complying with operational and personnel policies.
• Oversees training made available to Education personnel and volunteers.
• Provides leadership to resolve disputes and mediates complaints at the lowest possible level.

• Ability to maintain personal boundaries in the face of highly emotional situations.
• Possession of a valid Hawaii driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Certification from courses associated with animal sheltering and behavior. (This can be achieved while on the job)
• Certifications: The Humane Society of the United States offers a Certified Humane Education Specialist (CHES) program to enhance the humane educator’s credentials. (This can be achieved while on the job)

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Education, Humane Education, Non-Profit Management, Communications or related field. (Professional level work experience may be substituted for Bachelor’s degree requirement.) One year of professional level work experience may be substituted for each year of required education, up to a maximum of four years.
• A High School Diploma or GED is required when substituting professional level work experience for the Bachelor’s degree requirement.
• Three (3) to five (5) years related work experience, including lesson plans, designing curriculum and teaching children.
• One (1) to three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity in Humane Education, Education, Animal Shelter or related non-profit organization.
• Knowledge of business and management principles planning, human resources, resource allocation, leadership, and coordination of people, projects, and resources.

COMPUTER SKILLS

• Knowledge of Windows based software
• Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Basic computer skills including, but not limited to, ability to access databases, check company e-mail, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to: Routinely lift 40 pounds and perform daily strenuous activities including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
• Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion.
• Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
• Exposure to dogs, cats, and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
• Valid driver’s license, meeting HARF’s driver qualification standards; ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.
• Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; the position includes weekends, nights, and holiday work.
